So we had HR 4439 from January of 2010 proposing to increase the tax on pipe tobacco from $2.8311 per pound to $24.78 per pound. Just a mere 875%...that's all. Thankfully that bill died in committee.
Of course there is HR 1639 introduced April of 2011, which there is already an active topic opened about.
Now, someone in their infinite wisdom again proposed S 1403 in July of 2011. This proposes increased educactional funding for disabled and mentally retarded children, and of course these funds will be generated by none other than...
Taxing the living crap out of tobacco products! Bet you didn't see that one coming.
This affects pipe tobacco, small cigars, cigarettes, as well as smokeless tobacco.
Here is an article on pipesmagazine.com about it:
http://pipesmagazine...-increase-ever/
A couple excerpts from the bill with my math on the percentages:
SEC. 3. TOBACCO TAX INCREASE AND PARITY.
For Smokeless Tobacco...
This is just absolutely nuts...I have already sent off letters to my congressmen on this issue. I just wonder what happens when they tax the tobacco industry so much, and their goal to get everyone to quit smoking and using tobacco actually happens...Where does the funding they sought to get from this come from then?

A couple excerpts from the bill with my math on the percentages:
SEC. 3. TOBACCO TAX INCREASE AND PARITY.
(a) Short Title- This section may be cited as the ‘Saving Lives by Lowering Tobacco Use Act’.
(b) Increase in Excise Tax on Small Cigars and Cigarettes-
(1) SMALL CIGARS- Section 5701(a)(1) of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 is amended by striking ‘$50.33’ and inserting ‘$100.50’. (~200% Increase)
(2) CIGARETTES- Section 5701(b) of such Code is amended--
(A) by striking ‘$50.33’ in paragraph (1) and inserting ‘$100.50’, and (~200% Increase)
(B) by striking ‘$105.69’ in paragraph (2) and inserting ‘$211.04’. (~200% Increase)
(c) Tax Parity for Pipe Tobacco and Roll-Your-Own Tobacco-
(1) PIPE TOBACCO- Section 5701(f) of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 is amended by striking ‘$2.8311 cents’ and inserting ‘$49.55’. (1,750% increase!? That's a comma, not a decimal point...One-THOUSAND-Seven-Hundred-Fifty percent!?)
(2) ROLL-YOUR-OWN TOBACCO- Section 5701(g) of such Code is amended by striking ‘$24.78’ and inserting ‘$49.55’. (`200% Increase)
For Smokeless Tobacco...
(f) Tax Parity for Smokeless Tobacco-
(1) IN GENERAL- Section 5701(e) of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 is amended--
(A) in paragraph (1), by striking ‘$1.51’ and inserting ‘$26.79’; (1,774% Increase!?)
(B) in paragraph (2), by striking ‘50.33 cents’ and inserting ‘$10.72’; and (2,130% Increase!??)

I just wonder what happens when they tax the tobacco industry so much, and their goal to get everyone to quit smoking and using tobacco actually happens...Where does the funding they sought to get from this come from then?
