For anyone who's from the area or been there often enough to know the area, I'll be there May 4-8 with my wife for some conference she's attending. Which means during the days I'm free to wander the city, smoke a plethora of cigars, and simply hang around looking for fun things to do. My first step in this process of course is to choose from a list of hotels available to us, which all seem to be centered close to the convention center and Seaport Village/Harbor Drive.

San Diego Marriott Hotel and Marina
Hilton Gaslamp Quater
Omni San Diego
Westin Horton Plaza

And of course the standard question, where are the smoke shops/lounges? With CA taxes I'm not expecting to go on a buying spree or anything, however I'm always looking for a good place to sit down for a smoke, possibly a cocktail as well. I'll be spending some time today at tripadvisor.com reading reviews of hotels, but any firsthand knowledge from you clowns is always best!

And it's never too early to start planning some type of herf!
 
Also looking for a decent golf course. Is the Coronado course nice? Public or Private? I'll have to do some more research on this...
 
I been there for a math conference once. Tijuana is a great place to visit for a couple of hours. Good luck.
 
Go to Point Loma Seafood for some of the best darn fish in the world. PM sent....
 
Try the North course at Torrey. Getting on as a single shouldn't be a problem. The non-resident rates for the South are pretty steep. Besides, who wants to get gouged on green fees and then have their ass kicked by the course? :laugh:
 
Omni is new and very nice. Right next to Petco and near all the night life in Downtown. Hotel Del is historical, and also very nice, right by the beach. It's about 10 min drive from Downtown though.

There are lots of nice courses in San Diego. But for convenience sake, I would say Coronado is your best bet. It's probably the 2nd nicest public course in town (1st being Torrey Pine, of course). If you need more choices, I'd say hit up www.golfsd.com. Another one near downtown is Riverwalk, which is nice also. It all depends on how far and how much you really want to spend. Ahhh, didn't notice that part about you having a whole day to roam around. Maybe you wouldn't mind a little driving. In which case, you have a crap load of choices for golfing. Let me think about which ones are worth visiting for you...

OK, here's a list of course that I have played or have knowledge of. All driving time is from downtown.

Eastlake - Somewhat reasonable price, semi-private course. East of downtown, about 20-25 min drive.
Coronado - 5-10 min drive.
Sycuan (Singing Hills) - Decend course with a decend price. East of downtown, about 20-25 min drive.
Torrey Pines - 20 min drive
Vineyard - very nice course. NE of downtown, 40-45 min drive.
Carmel Mt Ranch - nice course, a little difficult, 30 min drive
Eagle Crest - Nice, a little difficult, 40 min drive
Riverwalk- 10 min drive
Steele Canyon - never played, but suppose to be the #1 course in SD. around 20-25 min drive.
 
Hotel Del Coronado is really nice and overlooks the water. If you pay for that you might as well plasy Torrey South. I'm a big Chargers fan, been to San Diego a bunch of times and am a member on glorifythepast.com. I can ask around for you.
