Where did all my money go?
While recently visiting family in the UK my wife did another really nice thing for me. She took the train to London for some shoe shopping. No, dummy that wasn't for me but, something else was.
She paid a visit to Desmond Sautters tobacco shop on Mount Street in the heart of the city.
Now, with the current pound to dollar exchange rate it would never make sense to go there and buy the same Havanas that could be bought cheaper elsewhere.
But, Desmond is well known for hoarding loads of fine aged and rare Cuban Cigars in the cellar of his shop. He sometimes, for the right people will offer them up for sale. My wife called his shop to tell her story about how she wanted to surprise her husband back home and, how much he idolizes him and wished he could be there in person. Desmond told her to come on up and that he had the perfect thing to make my day back home when she returned. When she walked in he greeted her warmly. "Come, Come" he said and took her by the hand and led her downstairs to the cellar. Once down there he proceeded to pull box after box of aged cigars out of the cupboards while explaining the stories and facts behind them to my wife. Some were boxes from the 1880's with perfectly smokable cigars inside.
She later commented on what a nice gentleman that he was to me. Desmond is one of those fellows that you meet and instantly take a liking to. He reminds you of that favorite uncle that you always can't wait to pay a visit. Here is a picture of the unopened box of Davidoff Dom Perignon 1985 that that she bought for me.
Just kidding  ! For $5,000.00 US all we could afford was the picture and to drool..........Box split anyone? :whistling: I'm in for a fifer
I was on my way home from the shops with my three year old in the back when my cell phone started to ring. It was my wife and, she said she had someone who wanted to say hello. It was Desmond........"Hello young man, I just wanted to let you know that you have a lovely wife. And, that together we have managed to put a nice selection of rare vintage cigars for you to enjoy when she returns home". We chatted for a few more seconds and then we had to get off as he was on my wifes cousins cell phone.
So, the trip was a great success and she scored some great aged Dunhill and Davidoff cigars. As well as some classics from the great period of the late 80's and early 90's. He sat down and wrote descriptions with dates of every cigar she bought from him. After that he took some pictures with my wife and autographed an October 2001 Cigar Aficionado with a piece on him in it for me.
My only regret was that I could not be there myself to talk and learn from the man myself. If you ever find yourself in London be sure and call on the man, you won't regret it.
