Growing too fast.
Slept in a little late this morning, so by time I got my coffee and this Savinelli ELR (Extremely Limited Reserve), it was already rather warm out with the humidity off the charts. My glasses fogged up as soon as I walked out the door and the cigar’s somewhat oily Connecticut shade wrapper started to wrinkle slightly. There were several veins throughout and it felt a bit coarse from what looked like very fine tooth, however construction was impeccable. The Dominican binder and wrapper were firm when squeezed, had a good weight in the hand, and after punching the cap I found the draw perfect with a very fresh tobacco taste.
The cigar lit easily using my Colibri Oscar and in no time plumes of bluish white smoke began to pour from the newly lit tobacco. I blew on the embers to ensure the foot was burning evenly and let the smoke waft up to my nose, enjoying the pre-draw smell. After letting the fire sink in for several seconds, I took several quick puffs until smoke was really flowing well, and then let the fire sink in some more; I like waiting to take my first draw after a small amount of ash has formed. With my first draw I got a mild to medium spice that was perfect, the strength right at medium, and the body seemed rather light, quite smooth on the palate. Slowly exhaling through mouth and nose, I detected flavors of coffee with a hint of leather and what seemed to be a note of sweet hay, maybe a bit of vanilla as well. The finish had a lasting richness on the palate.
A quarter in and the burn was even with a light gray ash forming, holding strong until tapped off leaving only a slight coning in the coal. The spice, which I thought was mellowing slightly after the first few draws taken, seemed to be picking back up becoming right at medium. I found the strength picking up as well from a mild/medium to medium/full and the body slightly heavier on the palate. Flavors were as previously described with an earthiness coming through in the finish, which continued to be rich, smooth, and semi-lasting.
Through the second and third quarter, the burn was sharp with a strong, layered ash forming. The smoke, still medium to full strength, flowed effortlessly through the perfect draw with the spice a fairly strong white pepper on the tongue and throat. Towards the end, my sinuses became all but completely stopped up due to the heat/humidity, which made it difficult to really detect flavors. I will say it seemed a bit harsh at the final quarter and very full strength, which again I think my messed up sinuses had something to do with.
This was a very good cigar with sharp burn, perfect draw, and rich, delicious flavors. The strength and spice was spot on, matching my palate well, and I really liked how it intensified the further in I got. I’d be curious to see how these smoke with a year or two of downtime.
