So my wife decides this year that not only is she going to surprise the kids at Christmas, but me as well. This was given to her by a co-worker, and she said she couldn't pass it up once it was offered. I would have begged to differ...

So, here is the present:

This is Bailey the Bassett Hound. I wanted to name him Crosbey, Malkin, or Pinot, but I obviously lost that battle.
 
great looking dog! i love beagles and basset hounds, as well as Saint bernards (i have a saint)

That was my thought exactly...another flippin' mouth to feed. I suppose I could always just feed him my cats :whistling:.

Crosbey was way better I thought as well, but she named him after the Irish Cream.
 
Haha! Great lookin' pup Eric. Very happy for ya. I'm riding the puppy roller coaster right now. She's a handful but it's a lot of fun. I hope the same for you as well.

If you don't want him, just yank him out of your wife's and kid's arms and give him to me. :laugh:
 
I have to hide the pics from my kids or they will puppy nap him from you. They would eat him up. ENJOY!!! Look upon him as an excuse to walk him and smoke a cigar!~!!!

Congratulations. I was formerly owned by a Bassett. They're very special dogs. Like no other. Do your research. They have special needs. Never, ever, let them off a leash, unless you have a fenced in back yard. They are notorious cold trackers and won't quit till they find what they're looking for. Only Bloodhounds have better noses. When they have their nose to the ground, they can't hear you calling them.They can be stubborn and single minded and have a what's in it for me attitude. They learn quickly when food is used to reinforce the desired behavior.

I would reinforce what Doc said and also put an addendum to it. in my experience (on my third), they are a pretty "sensitive" breed. I know it sounds silly, but their feelings are easily hurt with a lot of yelling or even more than a gentle correction. Food rewards (not too many, they will eat and eat and eat and eat...) and positive reinforcement are the way to go. Keep them upbeat and happy and they'll be eager to please. Repeating what Doc said, do not let them off leash unless your enclosed. They will not give up the trail.

Good luck! They are great dogs and especially good for a family pet.

I have picked up on the sensitivity already. He can really hold a grudge as well. But, after two short weeks, he is house broken already. He is a very bright pup.

We do not have a fenced back yard, but are considering an invisible fence. Do you think that this would be enough to deter him from a sent?
 
Can the rest of us here at CP assume that your financial problems are cleared up enough so you can take on additional things like pets etc etc?

I wouldn't trust it. Once they get going on the trail there is very little that will deter them. Plus, once a little older, they have so much extra loose skin that I would question the ability of them to even feel the zap. I've never tried one, though, so I don't really know.

What he said. My hound got stung by a yellow jacket once and she never made a sound; she just shook it off. Her muzzle swelled up like a balloon.

I guess I should have figured that out when he got his first shot, and he slept through it :D. I have started the leash training process (so much fun :rolleyes:). He definately is taking over the house already.
