Emo update:

On 12/19 at 7:45 emo was taken in for prep. At 11:27 am he was out of surgery.
We then spent almost 8 hours in observation. He had a little bit of a complication, a small laceration to the back of his throat. which made for pretty red Kleenex every time he coughed. We can only surmise that it occured with the anesthetics process. After waiting for the ENT specialist to poke around, He was put on complete voice restriction- He is not supposed to speak at all !?!?!
He is home now, we got home at around 10:30 p.m. aside from that he is managing alright- He is scooting around and trying to remain as active as possbile.
.....I Will be on call during the week. Due to work, kids, school, and such I will check in as much as posible. He is with his roomate and three kids so if anything happens I am just a call away....

Rest up man! Ive had 5 knee surgeries in the past 3 years...3 scopes, 2 ACL reconstructions. They get easier every time! Scopes arent bad at all though...i was walking(well more like a limp...) the same day i had surgery last time(juts a few months ago).

They got this cool machine that bend my knee for me. Supposed to keep scar tissue from forming, giving me better range of motion in the future. That thing sucks! Talk about painful. Supposed to do (3)2 hour sessions. First ession laste about 80 minutes, second session was about the same.

It's 1am and the pain is enough to keep me from really sleeping. I sleeep about an hour and am awake for about an hour So now that I am up, I am going to contribute to my "post whoring" while doing cryo therapy. Basically a small han cooler with a sup pump. Fill it full of ice, pour water to fill up the rest of the space. The pump shots the water through a couple of tubes connected to a thin bladder wrapped around my knee. Beats ice packs any day. Helps manage the pain better also. The cooler is too short to hold long necks, but Red Stripe fit perfectly!

Cooler probably looks a lot like this:

You can see the blue tubing and off to the right is the part that wraps around you (the brown plastic thing)...for me, it was my foot.

Here's the foot version of the torture machine:

It has two motors (one for movement side-to-side and one for up-and-down). Each of the motors has a set of stops on it. You start out with the stops close together and just a little motion. Then every couple of days you have to widen the stops a bit which increases the motion. Because it's always working and stretching your muscles and joints, it's never comfortable.

My advice...try to find something else to do during the PT sessions to get your mind off the clock (I did 2 2-hours sessions every day for 6 weeks...they all sucked.)

Also, take the pain meds. I lived on oxycodone for 6 months....when the pain went away I stopped taking the meds. It was no big deal.

Give yourself time to heal. It's going to take longer than you want, but you will get better.

Cheers,
Joe

Yeah, the machine sucks. It has a controller on it where I can set up my range of motion. I started at 20deg extention and 35 deg flexion. By the end of the day I was at 13deg and 45 deg. The cryo box looks very similar. There are 3 holes drilled to allow suction, discharge and power through. I can't wait to have the gauze taken off. Then more cold can reach the joint to numb it.
