What are the rules on shipping butane? It's impossible to find over here. Can my wife send it in the mail if she declares it? Is it better to just hide it and hope it makes it through? Any online places that'll ship to an APO without having to buy a case?

Thanks for any info. :)

Any that I've bought online has had to be shipped ground because they won't allow it to be transported on planes.

I had an on-line dealer tell me he would have to purchase a "HazMat" permit to ship a case to me.

Whateverthehell that means.

This website seems to have it pretty well thought out.

The short story is just like Jonesy said, "Ground Only."

Gotta think some enterprising young Quartermaster grunt would be filling this need somewhere?

Yes it can be shipped post office ground with a special form. Fedex can ship it ground also with a Hazmat (hazarads material) fee. I doubt if it can be shipped APO as this goes by air.

I work in a shipping store and pretty much everything said above is correct. Anything in a pressurized container or flammable (butane is both) is considered ORM-D and can only be shipping using certain methods. I can't tell you for sure about the post office but UPS, FedEx and DHL cannot ship ORM-D items through any other method than a Ground service. With an APO even though it may make it to the domestic outgoing place to reach overseas via ground through USPS it would most certainly be stopped there as they wouldn't allow the package onto a plane.

Hope this helps.

I'll go ahead and post this ever though you probably already checked.

Check Wal-Mart. I asked three employees where their butane lighers or refills were, was sent to three different areas. Finally I end up in the hunting/camping/fishing section. Found a refill bottle of $0.99. I don't know how much butane is suppose to cost, but there was a lot. Apparently its a mystery to people that work there that this stuff exist.

I know its probably not some top shelf stuff that some people require (cheap plasitc bottle, looked like it was on the shelf for 5 years), but it works.

Look for a product called "Joker gas" This is what I used. If you have any interaction with the locals I am sure they can get it for you. Also, if there are any Special ops guys, they are always on the economy, maybe they could get it for you.

ORM-D can be shipped by air, but you have to find an outfit that will do it and then fill out a shippers declaration form and pay the fee.

Fedx will accept hazardous good for air transport....but only from approved accounts, meaning that they have demonstrated that they know the hazmat rules and know how to fill out the paperwork and such.

I deal with hazmats by air all the time. It can be done. Not easy for a guy off the street, but it can be done.

Butane could be classified under either ORM-D Air (not many manufacturers do this for butane anymore) or it would fall under UN2037 Receptacles, small, containing gas. You can ship 1kg of UN2037 on a passenger aircraft or 15kg on a cargo aircraft per IATA regulations, although a number of airlines have special rules that limit or forbid this on their aircraft.
