Should we have a vendor rating section?

I agree with others about the problems it can cause, along with the fact it may not get used.

The cigar thief website didn't do to well, only George reported someone. I like the keep it simple stupid method of thinking.

I mainly support this because it gives us, members of the CP community, more power.

I think it would be safe to say that if vendors knew we had a widely known and read board like this, they would treat us better.

Also how about instituting a rule whereby at least one attempt to reconcile must be made; you can only post a negative experience if this first attempt fails. You must also post all emails verbatim to show as best as possible all sides of the story.

What about doing it as a feedback system along the same lines as E-Bay.... the vendor could be listed, let's say alphabetically, with there website and then each person could rate them...

positive, nuetral or negative..... 1 star - 5 star.... 1 cigar - 5 cigar.... then that person could include a brief (50 or 100 word) explaination. The person who makes the rating must include their e-mail address so the vendor can possibly right the wrong.... each post gets one (1) edit by the poster.

There are a lot of issues to be worked out with this idea:

how often can you rate a vendor?

what's to stop a vendor from creating an account just to give positive ratings?

There would have to be a limit on how many ratings you can giver poer vendor (like 1/week) and weight the ratings by seniority and post count.

I would imagine this is a task Rod would not be too hot about.

1. Who is going to do the work of writing the code for a rating system?
2. How easy is it to manipulate a rating system?
3. In reference to 2, what keeps vendors from signing up w/ multiple accounts to manipulate the system?
4. What's wrong with the sytem we have now?

IMHO, a simple post like, "Has anyone done buisness with Billboard Tobacco, if so, PM me." would suffice. Then if you do order from them and it works out good, a simple post of, "I did buisness with them and everything shipped quickly." would suffice. The only need for someone else than the post starter to comment would be if it was a terribly bad past transaction that the whole board should know about. For example, " I did buisness with summabiotchcigars.com and he over charged, did not refund the difference, and took 2 weeks to get here."

For overseas shipments, a simple post of, "I have a question about an over seas vendor. Please PM me if you would like to know more." would suffice.

Also, these topics should be locked to keep people from manipulating the "system". This would take a moderator just for the single section. From what I understand, and please corect me if I am wrong, Rod doesn't want to have moderators any more after the Davey boy incidents (plural). I know Rod could allow a single moderator admin functions to only one section, as he did to get the beverages section up and running. But the title of "moderator" put people above others, which means that person(s) would have to totally trusted with being fair and unbiased. By my opinion, very few people here fall into that category.

So to quote Ric, "This would be opening a very big can of worms." I am sure Rod has been dropping in on this thread, and noting your guys concerns and requests. I want to commend him for letting us discuss the pros and cons, and work things out among us. He probably already has made a decision one way or another. Not voicing his opinion and letting us work things out allows the board to remain a community instead of "Rod's Cigar Pass playground".

Just my $.02 cents.

...you mean there are OTHER stores than CI..??..(kidding)..:D

Seriously, for us nO0bs, a listing of reputable vendors with comments from folks who've done business with them would be very useful.

There are eleventeen bajillion places on the internet to purchase from; recommendations would be very helpful....

I think we're getting carried away here.

The original idea was to simply have one additional "bucket" into which topics can go. That's all. I support that idea.

My answer remains, the same thing that keeps people from abusing everything else on this site--self moderation.

Forget it Emodx..... somehow the explanation of simplicity has flown completely over some heads.

If anyone can explain why its better/easier to have someone develop a rating system vs having the person ask about a vendor please state your case. So far, IMO, no one has pitched a good enough case to warrent the BS involved in emplementing such a program.

There's a reason why other respected boards don't do this......

If this is an International board then rating ISOMs should be fine.

Very simple solution:

Pin a Vendor Ratings List with a star system. The raters
can be anonymous with further contact to their PM. They only respond if they
know and trust you.

Done and done!

I noticed that emo posted what amounts to a review of a vendor in the HOT DEALS section.

That's as good a place as any to put this kind of stuff. I think having it be an unwritten rule that you post info on experiences with endors in the Hot Deals forum is a fine solution.
