I've only smoked indoors a few times. I just enjoy a cigar more ourside. But in the midst of the summer, it's just too hot and humid some evenings; and now that it's winter, it's too cold in the garage (yes - even here in Central Texas). The couple times I had cigars indoors in the summer, I confined myself to my office and opened a window. I also set a small fan aiming up at the smoke detector. But it was as much for simple circulation as anything else.

Just got me to thinking... Does anyone have problems setting off a smoke detector while enjoying a cigar indoors? It's cold enough now that I'd like to try it again - but not at the price of waking up the kids with an alarm at 10 pm! This is the hard-wired type of detector. Can't simply remove the battery and disable it. Is the fan idea the best, or would I not produce enough smoke to worry about it in the first place?

Set the one I have in my apartment many times so its been disabled. I do have a little fan that I point at a window that I crack and just blow the smoke out that way sometimes.

After a friends wedding at the hotel, four or five of us lit up in a non smoking room. In our state of inebriation, we failed to notice the smoke detector on the far wall. After about fifteen minutes it started going off, much to our displeasure. We couldn't get it to stop, so we ripped it off- wires and all. All that did was move the annoyance to across the carpet. There was no way to get to the battery without a screwdriver, so somebody probably got charged for a new smoke detector the next day. :whistling: Good thing it wasn't my room.

Stretch a rubber glove over the smoke head to cover up the vent hole/slots - just don't forget to take it off or people will give you some really strange looks when they come over! (been working on fire alarms for 15 years ;) )

I find that using a sock works as well, presuming the detector is smaller in diameter.

Dampen a towel (paper or cloth) and cover the detector.
Not sure if it's necessary though if it's just you smoking...
Give it a 'test' during the day!

If it's a photoelectric detector that would probably be good enough, but if it's an ioization detector the particles would be small enough to get through the realativly large holes in the sock (they are much more sensitive than photo detectors).

You just need to smoke better cigars! Or get one of those smoke detectors that recognizes premium hand rolled vs. all others!
