Packed almost a full bowl, and lit it up. After about 3 min or so, I would puff and no smoke would come out; however if I blew through the pipe, bails of smoke would come out of the bowl. Doesn't make sense, and not the first time this has happened. Did I pack it wrong?

It almost sounds like the pipe was never really lit all the way. Make sure you get good coverage all around when you do your second light. Move that flame.

I've never experienced this, so that's all I've got. Hopefully someone who has more experience than I have will chime in.

I have had the same thing happen at times. I cover the bowl with side of lighter or thumb and take a few puffs to get it going. I think LB hit the cause of this happening.

I think you got a severe case of packing phobia. This insidious disease is precipitated by reading too much on the internet. Just relax and learn by doing. Packing a pipe ain't as hard as some would lead you to believe. Fer Christ's sakes it's pipe smoking not physics.

Doc.

When I use a torch lighter, I sometimes light the bowl and the top goes out, but below that stays lit. It kind of smokes like you describe. But I just move the lighter farther away when I light again and the top will catch up.

I don't know if I'm describing it right but the question is Do you use a torch?

Haha, nice Doc. This is true...for a beginner it can be frustrating as hell to have to light every five minutes, but with practice comes success. That first time you get the pack just right is more rewarding than anything. Keep trying!

I figured out the problem, I packed the bowl too loosely. I packed a fresh bowl last night, tighter than usual, and it smoked much better.
