I am sure everyone has seen this "Family Plan" thing that all the dealers are offering to get you into a new vehicle, its going for another week or so. anyway I went to my local dealer and bought a new truck.

I decided to get the truck after I got home from work last Friday night( it was a total whim). It was 6:30 when I arrived at the dealership and was 12:30 am when I finally walked out!. It was shocking how freaking long it took to buy the damn thing.

The great thing about this family plan thing is that there is no haggling over the price. I got mine for about $2500 below invoice and I had a trade in which they paid off.

I get a new truck about every year and usually its not a big deal but I decided to go all out and get the best one they had.
Don't ask what it cost because I am still in shock over that too ???

I've never bought a new vehicle in my life so I wouldn't know. I think the newest vehicle I've ever owned was seven years old when I bought it. My daily driver is a 1987 Buick Park Avenue with 294,000 miles on it  I bought it seven years ago with 155,000 and I think it cost me $1,500.00. It now has a new engine and transmission so it should go to 400,000 easily :p My BIG :0 purchase was a 1979 BMW 733i which I bought in 1993 for $3,500.00 which is the most I've ever spent on a car. I still have that car and it has well over 200,000 miles on it now. Here are some of my other recent purchases:

1986 Jaguar XJ6 (black), paid $1,500.00 for it in 1999, 105,000 miles. It's now a parts car :0 (yeah Fast4Dr, it's the one on blocks)
1986 Jaguar XJ6 (grey), paid $900.00 for it in 2000, 152,000 miles. This is the one I fixed up and now show it (once it gets fixed from being hit) :0
1987 Jaguar XJ6 (grey), paid $300.00 for it in 2003, 102,000 miles. (Identical in interior & exterior color to the grey 1986). Using parts from the first one and it's being painted by a friend of mine. It'll be almost as good as the 1986 when it's done.
1992 Jaguar XJ6 (blue), paid $2,500.00 for it in 2005. I had to fix some stupid, minor problems and I hope to sell it soon since book value is over $5,000.00. Anyone wanna buy it?

Actually, you'd be surprised. Most common parts (tune up parts, brakes, etc.) are in line with American & Japaneese cars with respect to price and availability. There are a few large on-line retailers that have just about anything you need and since their prices are great, this keeps the dealers in check with the ridiculous prices they used to be able to charge when that was your only option.

There are certain years to avoid (like 1988 - 1990 XJ6) and certain years that are very good (1986 & 1987 XJ6 & 1991 - 1994 XJ6).

The Borg Warner automatic transmissions in the 1987's and earlier are tricky to rebuild and slightly expensive but they don't fail that often. The new style transmission they started using in 1988 is virtually bullet-proof and I've never heard of one failing. The engines rarely ever "blow up" (spin rod bearings) and yeah, if you get them over 100,000 miles, you'll be looking at having to re-do the cylinder head which is fairly complicated on the 1987s and earlier but relatively easy on the 1988s and on.

You can get lucky with just about any make of car and unlucky as well. My former girlfriend owned her 1987 XJ6 for eight years and NOTHING and I mean NOTHING ever went wrong with it. On the other hand, I've know people who've have nothing but trouble with their Toyotas which are supposed to be one of the most reliable cars in the world.

Gas mileage is reasonable, my older XJ6s average 17 to 18 MPG and the 1992 usually does 20 to 21 MPG.

The electrical problems that Jaguars were known for in the 1960's is a reputation that's hard to live down but I've never experiencesd any out of the ordinary electrical problems with any of the Jaguars I've owned.

I really have no experience with the newer XJ8 (1998 and on) because they now use a V8 in those.

I don't buy them in exactly "pristine" condition. :p The black one ran when I bought it but not well. The 1986 I bought knowing it had a blown head gasket, and the 1987 I bought knowing it needed lots of things (it hadn't run in ten years). I got a deal on the 1992 because it was from one of the Jaguar Club members who had too many cars on his lot and he was bringing a whole bunch of them to a dealer's auction and he gave me the first crack at whichever one(s) I wanted. He sold it to me for slightly less than what he figured it would go for at auction.

good luck with the new truck...i would rather get another root canal then buy a new car again. next time i will declare shananagans and they will regret it! Actually i have a good repore with my toyota dealership, as my wife, parents and i have bought 4 cars from them in 2 years. i hardly ever pay full price for an oil change, they all know me by name, and being a long time friend of the service manager doesn;t hurt either ;)

Good thing my Mom works for Ford Motor Credit Company  This lets me get below invoice pricing on any Ford car company :D Family pricing 24/7/365 :p

Oh and what did you get???

Bought my latest ride (2004 Jetta TDI) new using the Costco "Car Buyer's Club" which basically gets you fleet prices. Man, I'll never do it another way. I listed what I wanted, I got an e-mail from the dealer, called them up and got the "no-s#!t-take-it-or-leave-it" price. It was a hell of a good deal....

Not sure how it would play with the "employee" price games going on now, but it was painless and about $2200.00 less than I'd been quoted previously.

The wife's new BeeEmm was a no haggle deal as well. Not a cheap car, and not a huge discount, but we literally had one built for us and it was also painless...except the big number at the bottom of the sales invoice.... :p

FWIW - B.B.S.

I got the 2006 F250 super duty Lariat Diesel.
Fully loaded, 4x4 with chrome and leather everywhere. this thing even has wood grain interior

You only live once until you pay for diesel fuel.

I really want a new 3/4 ton myself but I won't be able to pull it off before the speical employee pricing deals for EVERYONE ends. Is ok I will just have to stick with Chevy cause I get gm discount anyways. Would really like the ford though cause the body sits up higher (frame is same height).

You do not think they up'ed the sticker price to cover the price off? They are all making money off of this new advertising and the people are getting dupped.

I'm not so sure I believe your conspiracy theory. I read an article in July that while the big American auto makers moved lots of inventory with employee pricing, they didn't really make much big bucks off of it. Hmmmmm

I don't believe they raised the sticker price at all. But, they are still making money off it because they get most people roped into extended warranties and they will make money off servicing the vehicles. See my post about TIRES FOR LIFE.

Yea but how much money and time have you spent on all the above cars to have at least one of them working 75% of the time??
