I was in the mood for some popcorn. My little monsters darling children ate all we have in the house. So off to the store to get more for my late night munchies.
I grab my $3.00 worth of popcorn and make for the check out line. Once I get there I fall in behind a couple who has a big ol cart full of groceries. There is only one cashier working, so I have little choice. All their items were rung up and the total was a bit more than their food stamp card could afford. They debate for a couple minutes about which items to leave behind and it is at this point I notice that they have had a bit too much to drink.
Away go the eggs, milk, bread, and juice. The total is still too high. Still no other cashiers as the line behind me is growing. The couple debates a bit more, away go the canned veggies, the chicken, and other staple foods. I still see 3 cases of soda, several boxes of cheese-its, and some oreos among other things still on the counter. Total is still too high for them. By now there are 5 people behind me as we all stand and observe the debate going on at the register.
More items are removed from the pile. Then more, and more including the relish tray, deli meats, and the fancy chocolates. In the end the cart full of items has been reduced to one case of soda, two boxes of cheese-its and a couple pot pies. Finally the total is low enough and they make the purchase with the food stamp card.
After the sale is finished, the couple remembers that they need some cigarettes. The lone cashier goes to fetch the 2 cartons of cigs for them with which they pay in cash......with a $100 bill!!
After nearly 15 minutes of standing there watching this drama unfold I finally get to pay for my popcorn. The line is now about 9 deep. As I pick up my bag of hard earned popcorn and head for the door, up walks two more store employees who open a couple other registers for the remaining customers. ARGH!
So here I sit, with some popcorn I no longer am in the mood for. All because some people cannot wait to go shopping when they are sober.
I post this in the hopes that it will save some of my BOTL from a similar fate.
