So, when in hell was Memorial Day,

My family has been in the States since the early 1600's. Many of my family line has served in all the wars this country has been in. I am not aware if any is serving since Sept 11th. Grandpa was a tail gunner on a B-17 bomber during WW II. Pop served 1959-1963. Then the 1 year inactive where they had meetings then so he was cleared in 1964 if I remember right. He was on a Destroyer as a Torpedo man and I think it was a USS Hull class Destroyer. My dad's brother served on a Frigate while Pop was in. I guess they ran into each other in port in the Pacific some where.

Of course my brother served during the first Gulf War. I served as well. Many have served before us and many will surely serve after us once we are laid to rest. I volunteered at a VA Hospital when I was in college back in the 1990's and I started doing it before Memorial Day. I think I did like March to November. After Veteran's Day is when I stopped due to working full time and going to school almost full time at the University of Utah. After I got out in 1997, I worked at the University of Utah Medical Center as a Messenger. One of the duties was transporting patients for X-rays and what not. I got a chance to talk to this WW II veteran on Veteran's Day. One conversation I will never forget.

While in High School, the Pathfinders in the High School ROTC program got the honor of carrying the American Flag in the Veteran's Day Parade. I think it was in 1990 and I still have the picture that hit the front page of the Salt Lake Tribune in which my ugly mug is in it.

We had a old man that was on our paper route and he had served in 3 wars. I don't remember meeting anyone more humble than he was. I just wished I was a little older when I met him so I could have heard the stories he could have told.

My family has been in the States since the early 1600's.

1634 here . . . first five generations or so in New London, Connecticutt and the 4th generation of us here served in the Revolution as members of the Connecticutt Miliitia. My grandfather on my mother's side was in WWI; my older brother was in 'Nam. I served during the Iranian Hostage Crisis and have a medal for my battalion's part in the airlift.

We're not a military family per se, but we've seen the elephant a time or two and spent our time on the wall, keeping watch in the night.

Great post Doc. Our town places flags every 100ft all over town and has a nice writeup in the paper about sacrifices and there is a even a gathering in the main park on Monday night. I made sure to tell my kids what the meaning of the day is and the town hasn't forgotten either.
