Last Friday I was slogging through a rough day at work after a long-and-hard week. 3pm rolled around before I was able to get up for my lunch break and I grabbed an Indian Tobac stick from my work humidor and told my manager I was heading to lunch. His reply stopped me in my tracks:

"You haven't gone to lunch yet? Shit, do you want to just take the afternoon off?"
I was out the door so fast I left a cartoon dust cloud.

Raced home, thinking about what I would smoke during my bonus afternoon. I picked a Fuente Sun Grown Belicoso, and after a quick workout I hit the baltio and lit it up. I love the Fuente line and so I was expecting great things from this smoke. And still I was blown away by it. It was very complex smoke, with a lot of different flavors and I had difficulty pinning a lot of them down. There was definitely some sweetness and a very peculiar spice lingering on the edges. Easily the best thing I've smoked since the God of Fire on my birthday, and it was made all the better since I was supposed to be chained to my desk during the hour I was enjoying it!

Saturday rolled around and it was time for a lot of chores and whatnots around the house. After all those obligations were finished I sat down with another CI Sampler smoke, the Reserva Maxima corona by Puros Indios. I used to love Puros Indios cigars, and I was hoping this cigar would be like a reintroduction to an old flame. And in a way it was. Things started out pleasant enough, but within the first inch things went bad. Really bad. It started off as a harshness, which soon mounted on my pallet. Soon I could taste nothing but the acrid and bitter finish of the smoke. I was tried to struggle through it and in short-order the bitterness was supplanted with a foul ammonia flavor.

"Life is too short to smoke shitty cigars" was my response when I got an odd look from my wife as I stubbed out the barely smoked stick.

I reached back into the humidor and grabbed a RyJ Cedro #1 figuring I'd try something mild after getting burned by the PI Reserva. I lit the stick and within a few seconds heard an audible "crack." Sure enough the wrapper had split about ½ way down for about an inch. I was determined to smoke the cigar but was soon confronted with a similarly bitter finish on this new cigar. Thankfully it subsided in a minute or two and I settled into a nice mellow, but extremely ugly, smoke. Things only got uglier as the wrapper split and tore like the Hulk's ill-fitting shirt.

"At least it is tasty." I had been tempted to give up after abandoning the PI dog-rocket, and then I was again tempted to give-in when the RyJ started to go south on me. I'm glad I stuck things out though as the Cedro #2 turned out, blemishes and all, to be an enjoyable and relaxing smoke.
Sometimes it is nice to just kick-back and smoke, not having to worry about tasting notes and flavor profiles…

(EDIT: Sorry about the weird line-breaks. I'm going to swtich back to the standard txt editor as I think the rich-text is givine my problems....)

Nicely done, cuppa. I too have come to the conclusion that life is too short to smoke crappy cigars.

I don't hear much good about the Puros Indios these days.

Wilkey

Which is a real shame. Back in the day I practically lived off their maduro Pyramid. Their whole line was priced right and full of flavor.

I second that, those Special-Aged were really good for the price, I may have to revisit one soon. Nice review.
