Something Special 12yr Scotch

I did a search, only found who makes it. My father-in-law gifted this to me for my birthday, wondering what the quality of it is.

Yes, it appears it's a blend made by Seagrams. Beyond that, I don't know.
You might want to ask AVB about this one.

i can offer you some tips from the perspective of an enthusiastic novice.

If you like anything (affordable) blended, you'll like SOME type of single malt better.

Several inexpensive (delicious) bottlings are available presently..

Laphroaig Cask Strength 10 yr old, is amazing. And Rocket Fuel, for blizzards. Leave It Alone, till you're in danger of hypothermia. If you've just fought through a nor'easter and dodged the ice floes.. Laphroaig Cask Strength is ideal. You were warned. Take your boots off FIRST..

Macallan Cask Strength is for drinking out of thimbles, for funerals. SMALL thimbles. enough said. a bottle should last you through Several funerals.

Aberlour (thanks, ABV) 15 yr old Sherry finish, is my present 'cheap thrill' .. bloddy delicious, 45$ about, doesn't make you shout with joy nor weep with pain when paying.. but not much at the price tastes better.

And the blackadder sales at binnys' have me somewhat bug eyed. what a sweet time to stock up.. :blush:

This is an old thread. But whoever asked about the "Something Special" Scotch caught my attention. I think AVB is entirely wrong. This is a modest-cost 12 y.o. blend that really tastes good. It has Longmorn in it; a particular malt. I discovered it quite accidentally at 'Warehouse Liquors' in Manhattan, where they often obtain large quantities of other liquor stores' unsold stocks. But is it particularly smooth, with no heat or phenolic sharpness, shows some light peat and sherry(?) cask overtones. Honestly, as a decent light blend, I like the Grouse. But this is far superior. Not as complex as a JW Black Label or Chivas, still it is to my mind at least as tasty. Someone knew what they were doing in blending this.

While I usually welcome new members with open arms I must say you come across like a total dumb ass. Coming on here and calling our resident scotch guru entirely wrong about anything, on your first post no less gives you zero credibility in my eyes. You may be better suited for a different forum.

There is a reason they make so many different blends.....somebody has to like them and there are many better at this price point. Strictly my opinion, of course.

OK, I'm a newbie here, but slap me silly.. don't early scotch drinkers ussually start off with the blends until they develope the palet to appreciate a single malt?

Then again I've been called a scotch snob at times, not that I have the experiance of your resident guru, but I prefer the single malts scotches neat unless it's a cast, then maybe a spot of water to open it up. Dont want to ruin a good scotch with ice or water, right.

IMHO.. chivas is only good in coke.

As I've said many times before, "There is no wrong way to drink Scotch. Neat, over ice or with a little water are all perfectly acceptable."
