I’ve had this cigar sitting in the back of my humidor for several months now. It was a gift from @MX at one of the Denver Herf events. I’m a huge fan of the Rose of Sharon from Southern Draw, so I have high hopes for this one.
Appearance/Construction: This cigar appears immaculate. A nice subtle sheen to it without being overly oily and no visible flaws.
Upon cold drawing, no discernible flavors standing out. Maybe my palate is shit, but I’m getting just a nice tobacco flavor. Draw isn’t too tight, but maybe a little more than I generally prefer. Fine with me, time to light it up.
Upon first light it appears this cigar might be a doozy, heavy on the dry cocoa and cedar with a medium amount of smoke. After a short time the cocoa backs off and is replaced by a subtle barbecue flavor with some spice on the back of the tongue. The smoke coats my mouth with a nice butteriness to it.
After the first inch, the construction remains solid with no need for touchups of any sort. The ash is hanging on firmly as if it’s glued in place. No sooner do I finish typing this out and the ash falls straight in my lap.
Maybe it’s due to this being my second cigar of the day, but the nicotine is sitting at a medium+ for me. Nothing overpowering, but definitely a slight head buzz. I’d recommend this for after a light meal.
I’m into the second third now and the butteriness has subsided and been replaced by some baking spices that dry the mouth a bit. Earthiness might be a good way to describe the profile I’m picking up. Generally, not what I look for in a cigar, but hey, life is about new experiences. Retrohaling has a slight pepperiness to it, but nothing too overwhelming. Surprisingly, it doesn’t bring out any new flavors either, hmm.
Down to the last third and the profile is the same as the last. Earthy, cedar, drying. One reviewer described a strange physical sensation of tightness in their upper chest and maybe I’m just imagining it because I read it, but I seem to get that same feeling. It isn’t altogether pleasant, but likely just in my head.
I’m glad to have smoked this cigar, but likely wouldn’t return to it. It isn’t my cup of tea, but that’s okay. I’m appreciative of the cigar and the thoughtfulness of the gift. Cheers and thanks again @MX !
