St. Louis Cardinals

Too cool...Won a few $$ and a few smokes tonight. The Cards might just pull out the series.

WooHoo!!!

Just read the games story, I'm going to have to figure out a way to watch the World Series, this reading stuff ain't workin' out.

Way to go CARDS!!

NO PITCHING! We have no pitching. A bunch of rag arms in the pen and only one quality starter. If we even get to playoffs it will be a short series for sure.

Looks like I was off base (pun intended) on this one.

Well now.....let's assess what is going on here. Cards up 2-1 in the Series. Not a commanding lead for sure, but a lead nonetheless. Pitching for the good guys looks good so far. I'll take holding the Detroit to 3 runs almost anytime. It is still hard for me to fathom what is going on, Some people probably think we probably shouldn't be here, BUT WE ARE AND IT'S GREAT!

I went to game 3, awesome. Chose not go last night becasue of the weather. Taking my daughter tonight when it will be wet again. Things are good and Suppan still hasn't pitched in the Series and he was our best in playoffs so far, but that can change in a moment.

GO Cards!

Just in case anyone cares......which almost no one except those in St. Louis seem to...The CARDS are up 3 games to 1.

Last night was fun at the game, we got a little help from the Tigers...thanks guys. The weather right now is unbelievably nasty. 30 or so mph winds, rain and mid 40's temp. They may not get this one in either, if they do it will definitely be uncomfortable.

It is amazing to me to think they have gotten this far with all the trouble this year and the way they played until the playoffs started. And...most of this WS is without any great offensive contributions from Albert, but Rolen is hitting and those rag arm washed up pitchers are gettin'er done.

GO CARDS!

I live in Cards land but I could care less. I'm just looking forward to another great day of COLLEGE FOOTBALL tomorrow! That is, if the 'Cuse can muster up a win against the damn Bearcats. Also, I wouldn't mind seeing the Criminoles, I mean Seminoles, lose again!

Congrat's to those Cards fans out there!

I expected better from the Tigers. I still remember the great Card teams from the 60's Did anybody pitch better then Bob Gibson in his prime?

I'd beg to differ, look at Gibson's year for 1968 (his best) to Koufax's best of 1966.

Koufax, Sandy

Sanford Braun

Arguably the greatest pitcher who ever lived, Koufax threw four no-hitters, dominated the major leagues in the 1960s, broke numerous strikeout records, led the league in ERA for an unprecedented five consecutive years, and refused to pitch on Yom Kippur. After facing Koufax in the World Series, Mickey Mantle said, "Everything they were writing about him is true." Casey Stengel, who had seen them all, remarked, "the fella is positively amazing and it almost takes a miracle to beat him." Willie Mays said, "Sandy would strike me out two or three times a game and I knew every pitch he was going to throw: fast ball, breaking ball. I knew it. He would let you look at it and still I could not hit it." Willie Stargel may have summed it up best, though, when he said, "hitting against him is like eating soup with a fork."
The youngest player ever elected to the Hall of Fame when he was inducted in 1972 (arm problems caused him to retire at 31), Koufax led the National League in ERA for the final 5 years of his career and his lifetime ERA was a dazzling 2.76. From 1962-66, he had the most dominant span ever seen in baseball and his won-lost records were 14-7, 25-5, 19-5, 26-8, and 27-9, while leading the league in strikeouts 4 times (3 of those years, he fanned over 300). His lifetime winning percentage was .655 (165-87), and over his entire career, he averaged more than a strikeout per inning. The great southpaw pitched a staggering total of 27 complete games in each of his last two seasons. In 4 World Series, he had a cumulative ERA of 0.95, 61 strikeouts, and 2 shutouts.

I should mention that I'm also a bit biased. Gibson beat my Red Sox 3 times in the '67 WS. As far as I'm concerned he was nothing but a head-hunter who intimidated hitters by throwing his 95+mph fast ball at their heads. He would not be as successful today. They don't let people pitch that way anymore. Koufax would.

Doc.

I have no problem with what you are saying, over time Koufax was one of the greatest pitchers ever. I'm saying that his best year was not as good as the best year of Bob Gibson no mater how good he was over time. Even Cy Young wasn't the best pitcher most years.....just the most consistant..
