Garry Shider, the longtime musical director of Parliament-Funkadelic has lost his battle with cancer.

Shider first appeared on Funkadelic's 1971 album "Maggot Brain" and Parliament's second album "Up for the Down Stroke," and joined P-Funk for good in 1972. He became one of Clinton's most trusted lieutenants, co-writing and providing vocals on some of the band's biggest hits — including "Atomic Dog," "Cosmic Slop," "Can You Get to That" and "One Nation Under the Groove."

He also toured with P-Funk for many years and was still considered an active member of the group. He also was among 16 members — including Clinton — who were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997, winning recognition for their musicianship, politically charged lyrics, outlandish concept albums and memorable live performances.

For those who didn't live through it you have no idea how much P-Funk has influenced the course of American music.

Funk on brother.

I was alive but unaware of his contributions. Just getting around to discovering this stuff and am liking what I am finding. RIP Garry.

Although I like funk, and I'm familiar with much of what you wrote, I can't say that I've developed a thorough understanding of it. I also know that I won't be able to quite 'get it,' but I'd like to make some sort of effort.

What should I listen to, if I want to cover my funk basics? Thanks in advance.

Just do a search on "essential funk records". There are folks out there who know this genre far better than I.

Crazy how many have passed in the last month.

Parliament was a huge in my uncles house when I was a kid. I think his squeeze was heavy into them but still what an awesome band. Pretty sexual without being gross, Parliament records served as a pickup line manual when I was too young to really understand what I was saying (do fries come with that shake?)

Also in the kind funk & RB catagory are Curtis Mayfield ( Pusherman is a classic and I think Bootsy Collins did some work with him too.) Ohio Players ( Fire, Rollercoaster of love) and Rose Royce ( Carwash, Put your money where your mouth is)

There is a memorial fund set up to help cover the medical costs.
