Stinky Tofu

Went out with some of my friends last night to a Taiwanese restaurant, and ordered a plethora of dishes. One dish we tried was Stinky Tofu. If you watch the show Bizzare Foods, you've probably seen Andrew Zimmern (the host) try this stuff. In any case, when the dish arrived it looked pretty good, just like fried tofu. However, the odor was extremely pungent, and it's clear why they call this stuff STINKY Tofu. It smelled like rotten garbage, horse manure and really bad breath (really bad!), however the taste was quite mellow. It did not taste how it smelled. In any case, just thought I would share. Anyone ever try this stuff? I won't be trying it again, though it was quite interesting...

I need to go smoke a few cigars to clean my palate.

Stinky tofu is awesome! :thumbs: Except none of the restaurants I know in LA make it that good. If you ever go to Taiwan, you should try ma-la stinky tofu, literally translated to numbing and spicy stinky tofu! It can come with coagulated duck blood if you like! Great stuff!

Stinky tofu is awesome! :thumbs: Except none of the restaurants I know in LA make it that good. If you ever go to Taiwan, you should try ma-la stinky tofu, literally translated to numbing and spicy stinky tofu! It can come with coagulated duck blood if you like! Great stuff!

We also had ma-la stinky tofu too! It had that cube of coagulated blood in it, with tons of peppers. Taste isn't bad, it's just the smell. You should try this place in San Gabriel called "Indian Restaurant". I think you might like it. It got really good reviews, and probably the closest thing in LA to authentic Taiwanese food.

Yeah, actually... Tofu is actually largely tasteless and scentless.

I know Indian all too well. Good food, plenty of beer and sake, and the waitresses aren't bad either! But their stinky tofu is a bit different than the traditional style, which comes in deep fried pieces about the size of an ice cube and served with chinese kimchee. Indian's is chopped up and stir fried. Tasty, but not quite the same.

I think I have had that. I mentioned it to Leah and she said "You should try all things three times. The first time is shock, the second is building memories and flavors. By the third time you'll know" haha

Have you had fermented tofu? Thats pretty tasty.

Um, did you say coagulated duck blood? I'm all for expanding horizons and all that but there is a line. Did the morning after you ate this remind you of Jeff Daniels' famous scene in "Dumb and Dumber"? I just came from a Laotian/Thai Dam wedding with great food and I tried things I've never seen before and enjoyed them. But I most definitely would've passed on the coagulated duck's blood had I know it was there. And for the record, that Andrew Zimmern is completely insane.

I used to hate it, but it grew on me. The smell is totally offensive if you've never smelled it before.

Rod, which resturant did you go? I used to live in Temple City.
