I'm hoping that some experienced Googlers can help me out with this one. I'm looking for an image of an old-school cable-box "clicker."

In the early 80's when my family moved into our first single family home, we got cable TV for the first time. I don't know how the cable was connected to our old UHF/VHF television set, but I do remember how we changed channels: a big brown "clicker" box that was wired to the back of the TV. It had about 10 feet of cable attached to it, so channel surfing from too far back in the room wasn't always an option (but as one of the kids always laying on the ground, it was great!). There were approximately 20 buttons on it that "clicked down" into place when pressed, and a 3-way toggle switch that activated a different channel on that button (for 60 or so channels in all). There was even a guide printed on the box that showed you what channels you got on the high/middle/low settings on each button.

Does ANYONE else remember these? I grew up in the South Jersey suburbs of Philadelphia. I couldn't tell you who our cable provider was at the time (this was years before the Comcast Empire). If so, can you help me find an image of one? I'd be most appreciative.

Thanks in advance!

I don't remember one like that. I do remember one like this (below) that my grand-parents had...on some floor-model curtis mathes or something...only theirs had three buttons instead of two.

Linky...

Also, I couldn't help but share this that popped up in a search:

I remember exactly what you're talking about.

If you clicked the 3 and the 7 together at the same time, playboy kinda came through. Better than the straigh up scrambled version, anyway.

I'll look around for a picture of one.

I know exactly what you're talking about, but I've searched for the last hour and not found one image of it. We had one when we first got cable in 1984 or 1985. It was definitely a set top converter box. I was the remote control in our house! :)

Seriously, Phlicker. I think you defeated the internet. I cannot find a picture of the damn thing. Maybe there's no historical record of that era in cable television.
