Stroke Questions...

On Tuesday my Father had a stroke after work. They said he didn't even know his name at the time. Since then, every doctor and nurse (along with his co-workers who came by to say hello) said he's doing 100% better. He's only problem is speech and some memory lose. I did not really notice the memory lose until the nurse asked him where he was (he didn't know), what day it was (he said 8), and what year it was (he didn't know either).

My question is that I know he will be going through rehabilitation for speech and memory loss, but does anyone have any experience with these problems, and have any helpful suggestions we could use? It really just kills me that I watch him try to talk to me, and he can't think of the words to say. That and I don't know how long or how well he might be or become. Thanks for any help guys.

Sorry to hear about this. I would do a search on strokes and rehab for strokes. The severity and the time between the stroke and treatment is the critical part. All the best to your father for a full recovery!

Sorry to hear this John...my cousins husband had this happen to him when he was in his late 50's. He had similar problems, speech problems, movement problems, etc. He really has never recovered fully, he can speak a little better, but his right side is pretty much useless, and needs a wheelchair to get around. Really sad, as this guy was a Navy officer (commander i believe) back in his prime.
Hope all gets better, best of luck, I can tell you it is a long frustrating path for all involved.

My Dad turned 50 yesterday. :laugh:

My Mom had a stroke a few years ago and the assholes at the Atlantic city General hospital told her it was a migraine, gave her two aspirin and sent her home. :angry: Since the first 30 mins after the stroke are the most important to get medicine and she didn't get any help until the next morning, she now has serious problems with her movement and can only walk with the help of a cane and leg brace. However her speech returned to normally rather quickly and she suffered no memory loss what so ever.

I'm hoping they got your dad treatment ASAP, and that his memory and speech returns quickly, however every stroke is different, so there is no telling how long it will take.

Sorry to hear this, my grandmother some time back (she was 60 when it happened) had a stroke and her left side was useless. however with rehab and constent care she did get improved speech and some motor skills back. the memory loss was the tuff one and it varies per person on such thing including speech patterns. good luck and just let him know you love him and will be there for him. i took 2 summers after school to spend with my grandmother to provide care when i was 17 and 18. It made me a better person and I learned so much from her in that time and grew really close to her. I think it made her passing a little easier for me. Unfortunately, there are no hard and fast answers for you. The effects of a stroke are usually a little different for each individual. My best advice is to listen to the doctors and rehab people, be patient with your dad, and support him as much as possible.

We went through this a few years ago with my grandfather. It's tough, but with work improvement may be dramatic.

Talking with my Mother who is an Admin at a Retirement Home. She says there is almost always some improvement, often there is almost full recovery.

Sorry to hear about your dad, there doesn't seem to be a set of solutions to strokes, everyone is different. But most people do recover after some time. Best of luck and a prayer will be said for your dad.

That is my biggest problem. I'm the type of person who can't. I am realizing that it's all about time, nothing else we can do. It's going to be rough, but he's a pretty strong will guy. I think he'll make it through this fine. Again guys thanks for the good thoughts and prayers
