Somewhere, out there.
There is a large forest fire burning in the Boundary Waters right now. It is about 5% contained and has burned over 20,000 acres and about 45 buildings. We got word today that it has destroyed my good friends' cabin. :(

We go up there in the summer for some good times and were really looking forward to this year. My boy is just now starting to remember things like this from year to year (he's 4) and we were all pretty excited about building some new traditions between our young families. It's just not going to be the same now that it's gone.

They don't know what the prospects are going to be for rebuilding, but it doesn't look good. There are more and more fires up there every year.

At least no one has been injured in any of the 45 buildings (homes, businesses, cabins) that have been destroyed.

:( :(

If any of you have trips to the BWCA planned for this summer, you may want to do some checking.

That is sad news. We often think that we can fix anything but Mother Nature says no. I regret your loss because it really affects all of us. Good luck and hang in there.

I saw whats going on there in News yesterday, man thats terrible! :/

We have a big fire just north of us in Ga. that has burned 100,000+ acres, have one south of us the has burned 20,000, and there is one west of us and I think it stands at about 16,000. You go outside and everything is covered in ash, and smoke is everywhere. Florida is the driest it has ever been, even drier than in '98 when the fires were so bad in the central part of the state.

We are getting some rain yesterday and today on the coast, but I'm not sure it's going to make it inland to help the fire fighters.

Sorry about the terrible news.

What's the viability (and trust me, I'm not a builder) of making something more fire resistant (cement? brick?) and leaving the lot cleared to make a more durable structure?

Cigarstone always talks about one of the best times in his life bring the construction of his summer cabin. It took a few years, but the memories last forever.

It's hard to see this now, just trying to help out with the 'hope' department!

Best of luck,
Rob
