Here in Tucson we are already above 103 degrees. I looked at my temp meter in my humi and it was at 79 degrees. :( My thermostat is at 75 which makes it pretty chilly in here. When I saw the temp I decided to re-direct the vents on the wall in the general direction of my humi. It worked. 1/2 hour later the temp has dropped to 75 degrees. If you are in a climate like we have here, you may want to put your humi where it's in the path of air from your air conditioner. This made a substantial difference. With all the threads about Beatles You can't be too safe.

75 is not low enough to stop beetle hatching.

I have a portable unit that I move into the room that my cigars are in. Augmenting the homes A/C system, and keeping that room at approx 68 degrees. Works great until I someday get a chilled cabinet.

I would be nervous at 75, although I can't say anything definitive about it.

I plan on freezing everything starting tomorrow. I've been checking my cigars daily to be safe. I've got more bags being delivered tomorrow. We have a freezer here at the shop. I'm going to turn it down all the way and give them a week or so. So far I've been lucky. Once I've frozen them, do I ever need to worry again? I'll freeze anything else that comes in as well.

MadMonk - what kind of portable unit do you have? I've been looking at some lately but haven't seen any that have had consistently good reviews. If I could find one that would lower the temp in my upstairs office by about 8-9 degrees, I would be all over it. I've resisted moving my cigars up there (for obvious reasons being that upstairs the temp can get to 78 degrees or so). However, if I could get it down around 70-72, I would love to have my cigars in my domain (office).

Mine is a 10,000 btu unit manufactured by "Boston Products". Purchased at Wal-Mart for 3-4 hundred.

I also have Gila heat control Window film on the windows in that room which is on the South side of the house. Brutal summer sun in the South!

This unit has over two years on it, running almost constantly. It has a remote control, which is a good thing, as the on unit touch pad crapped out after about a year.

Edit to add:
The house thermostat is set at 78 degrees right now, and the room is at 68 degrees. Outdoor temp is 80, and was 85 earlier.
When the summer temps hit 100 or better, this unit has performed well, keeping the room at an avg 68 with no problem. I figure the units differential is approx 2 degrees. I set it at 68, it will let the room go to just 70, and kick on.

HM, you might consider spending about $10 and getting a Ziplock Vacuum pump and the associated bags to seal the sticks before you freeze them. that way you are removing any air that may work against you and cause condensation inside the bags while you are freezing.

I picked up the pump and 8 1-gallon bags from Wal Mart for just at $10 ttal

Thanks for the info... perhaps I'll take a spin over to Walmart and a few other places tomorrow. :)

There have been numerous threads on this topic...or were you just commenting, to help out?

As far as freezing...yup, there are threads on that too!

1-2 days in a frig, 2-3 in a freezer than 1-2 in the frig then 1-2 at room (say under 70deg) temp...then into the humi.
Oh yea...you'll find out a lot about how freezing helps...and how/why it does not(at least in the long term).

As far as the vacuum sealing, well, that has it's good and bad points.
