Temperature and humidity question

I bought a 66 quart Sterilite container over the weekend and have been getting it set up. I placed some cigar boxes and a couple plastic containers inside to take up some space.

My closet is pretty cool this time of year- around 50 degrees. I have been having trouble getting the humdity above 60% the last few days. I have some 65% beads in there, but the humidity levels just do not seem to want to go higher than a little over 60%. I even placed a bowl of water in there for a day and the levels still will not go higher.

Is it the lower temperature throwing off the hydrometer? Or could my little analog hydrometer not work well in a lower temp than when I did the calibration?

When I salt tested it, it read 75%, but the room it was in was between 65-70 degrees.

Just wondering if the closet is just too low of a temp for storage. I was going to buy a digital hydrometer, but the local store is sold out of all but the big bucks ones for the moment.

I do not want to place any sticks in there till I know I will not endanger them.

That temp should not make a difference with your hygrometer. Adding sticks will actually help maintain the RH in the cooler as right not you're trying to humidify plastic...which is somewhat difficult.

I think I read it's the 65 beads, you need 70's to get to 65 in a dry cold climate. Check with Viper to verify though.

You say you are getting over 60 RH, then don't stress - 61/62/63 is all
good!

Get that coolidor as full as possible, put empty boxes in to take
up space and the RH will stabilize.
