Mitch Mitchell, drummer for the legendary Jimi Hendrix Experience of the 1960s and the group's last surviving member, was found dead in his hotel room early Wednesday. He was 61.

Mitchell was a powerful force on "Are You Experienced?" the 1967 debut album of the Hendrix band. He had an explosive drumming style that can be heard in hard-charging songs such as "Fire" and "Manic Depression."

The Englishman had been drumming for the Experience Hendrix Tour, which performed Friday in Portland. It was the last stop on the West Coast part of the tour.

Hendrix died in 1970. Noel Redding, bass player for the trio, died in 2003.

Between the Experience and Cream it would be hard to say who influenced music more. RIP Mitch.

With the two bands you listed, that one's easy. The answer is Buddy Guy. He was a huge influence on them both.

Had a small drink and played some EXPERIENCE today. RIP!

RIP Experience. Learning to play drums growing up I always loved his style... nothing but fills! Very unique and was on the leading edge of that curve that changed rock drumming forever.

Just finished listening to Gypsy Eyes, now I'm listening to Manic Depression in remembrance of the Experience. RIP, Mitch.

Holy Sh*t! We just saw him a couple of weeks ago in his "Experience Jimi Hendrix" tour. This is unbelievable, although he seemed to be on something during the show he was really having fun at the time....

Ugh.

Are You Experienced and Axis: Bold as Love were two of the first LP's I ever owned.

"Spanish Castle Magic", "You Got Me Floatin'", "Manic Depression"...so many fine songs.

RIP Mitch

I really got into Hendrix in my early 20s and absolutely loved the drumming style. Next to Ian Paice and Charlie Watts, he was perhaps my favorite drummer to listen to. Great music to be sure, I'll have to dig out my old cassettes and give them a listen tonight. Anyone still got Hendrix on vinyl?

I've got at least 80 records between the official releases, imports and boots.

Good Lord Ray, any chance you're looking at adopting a middle-aged noob?

Well I had to go look and it is really only 63 albums on vinyl but if you count the CDs it gets over 80.

What sort of boots are out there? I had a couple live recordings of him that were released in the 80's (Monterey and one other venue I can't recall) and they were outstanding. He really is one that translates well from studio to live so I'm curious as to the quality of the boots.

Few are any good and some are just ripoffs but the "Live in Hawaii 1970" and one I got from Canada called "Hornet's Nest" are really very good and probably the best Hendrix boots I own.
