OK, so our oldest daughter is moving out at the end of April. My plan has been to turn her room into my smoking room, it's upstairs and carpeted. I've made this clear to Linda for sometime but now that the day's drawing near, she's starting to give me resistance. (I've been thinking more as of late that she may not be as opposed to the cigar room as she is letting go of Amie's room, but let's not factor that in)

So, for those of you who have an indoor smoking room, that's carpeted, is it possible to have this done and not have lingering smell in the room and rest of the house? Using ventilation, cloakers, FeBreeze and such, is this possible or not?

Thanks,
Wade

Hmm is your daughter going to collage? Anyhow you may want to remove the carpeting, and get a good ventilation system or purifier and you should be ok.

I'd guess the carpet would be problematic. All the rest of your concerns can be searched on (ventilation, smoke eaters, etc.).

I wouldn't be too quick to dismiss your wife's resistance to give up the room. If you push it too hard, you may end up with a resentful partner. Of course, I don't know your wife or you, but when a child leaves home, it's a big deal for some. A VERY big deal and a VERY difficult adjustment.

Good luck to you! :)

The ventilation and cloakers and such I've read plenty on, she's mostly concerned with the carpet. That being said, I do believe her biggest issue is "giving up the bedroom." But I've not yet confronted her on that, so we'll have to see how that plays out. But we don't want to make mama unhappy now do we!

Get rid of the carpet and put a window fan in. Smoke close to the fan, no problemo! :)

Tell her you where going to make it into a nursery for the grand kids. She'll install the ventilation for you.

Anything permeable is going to retain smell. That includes cloth funiture and many other things. Would be smart to eliminate the carpet. There is no such thing as a cigar room that doesn't smell. You may think it doesn't but I can assure you it does. Sorta like the cigarette smoker who goes outside to smoke and then walks back into a room. They sure don't think they smell like a cig but they do.

The key is minimizing the amount of time the smoke lingers. A good smoke eater/exhaust is a minimum.

I think you might be on to something with the whole "empty nest" issue. That's probably the biggest factor. You might want to back off on the idea for a little bit, but, at the same time, keep your foot in the door so to speak because, eventually, she'll look towards turning the room into a haven of her own. Lol!

And, if you do go the smoking room route....yessirreebob, I would definitely rip the carpet out pdq.

I say pull the carpet out and put in some wood floors, red pine is fairly inexpensive and wood will add value to the house its a win win situation.

Sort of offtrack but I noticed you spell your daughters name Amie I don't see that too often my wife spells her name the same.

I have to agree the more and more I think about it.

Wade,

I'd be willing to drive up this weekend and have a herf in your living room watching some NCAA basketball. If Linda complains, you can always say, "If I had a smoking room we wouldn't have this problem now, would we?"

All the above is great advice. Someone in a similar situation did the following. He got his child aside, in this case it was a boy, and bribed him with a car to tell his mother that it would be a great idea to turn his room into a smoking room. THe told his mother that it would make him feel more connected to home knowing that Daddy is always there in his room enjoying his cigars. He said that he would even come home more often to smoke with his father if they did it. That part sold the mother. In truth, father and son spent much time together smoking cigars during those college years.

Sax, that's blatant manipulation.

Doc.

Truth be told, it is but what ended up happening was that room ended up being a reason for the generations to come together, over cigars. The mother, who hated smoking, came in just to hang out with her men. Sometimes the right thing needs a little coaxing.

Well congratulations Wade on the fact you have an independent child, and at the very least the fact a smoking room is an option. IMHO in the immediate future like others here have stated your wife may be a little down with the reality of your little girl moving on. It may just be that you are putting too much focus on converting the room and not being as sympathetic as to the void your daughter will leave? ??? Good luck and congrats again....

Wade. We have 5 kids. For years it has always been about the kids.
Now we have half a daughter left (meaning she is half way out the door, not half a body - fool!)

When it's time for the kids to move, it simply means that it's back to your time. Women do get soppy but Linda will get over it.
IMHO, the faster you convert that room, the faster she will accept the fact that it is no longer your daughter's room.

Good luck, invite me over when it's done, with air tickets! :D Oh, speak to Atuck, he's been there done that.
