I am fortunate enough to have my office overlooking the Elizabeth River in Portsmouth VA. This morning we got a rare treat. The Navy berths it's Atlantic based Aircraft Carriers at the Norfolk Naval Base. From time to time, maintenance on these monsters requires them to be moved to a drydock at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard.

The good thing for me is that my office is between these two destinations.

About ten minutes ago the Truman steamed by the window on it's way from the shipyard to the naval base. Pretty cool to have that thing slide by so close that you can shout greetings to the sailors on the deck.

I didn't have a camera handy this time but about three months ago the George Washington sailed to the shipyard and I got a bunch of pics...one of which is in my profile showing the GW coming right at my window.

I don't know how to post these pictures but at the time I sent them to Moki. If there is interest I'll see if he can slap some of them on this thread.

nothing like seeing one of these beauties sailing by you. it is amazing that something that large can even float, let alone travel at 25-30 kts.

That must have been an impressive sight to say the least.
Every time I make a trip into NYC, I can't help but take the West Side Highway and sneak a peek at the Intrepid.

I remember playing war games with the Enterprise task group. My boat, when equipped with an extra noise maker, sounded just like a common Soviet boat. The Enterprise group got tactical orders that called for them to be elsewhere in a hurry. I presume Enterprise rang a flank bell, because there was a rooster tail behind the ship. This was in 1976! I can't imagine what kind of torque a state-of-the art carrier can produce. I heard that most of the task group couldn't keep up if she went balls to the walls.

as a side note, here in RI, we have the USS Saratoga berthed in Newport, and is being readied to become a floating museum (ie: USS Intrepid). Fund raisers and all that have been happening to get the project underway. sorry for the thread jack...
