Mount St. Helens blew up. I was stationed at Whidbey Island Naval Air Station at the time and the Marine detachment was put on standby alert for that Monday and Tuesday. On Wednesday my buddy and I were in his 4wd heading down to check things out. The authorities had blocked off the roads but that didn't include all the logging roads which ran all throughout the area. Eventually we pulled over and started to walk toward the volcano. After about 2 hours we had to turn back as our feet were getting really hot and the soles of our boots were getting soft and starting to melt. I still have a bottle of ash somewhere.
 
I was 13, standing in my front yard in Portland, watching the cloud rise and the lightning come out of it. It was months before I could ride my bike to work without a dust mask.

If you dig down in my parents yard, there is still a layer of ash.

Just wanted to mention that I really enjoy these little tidbits you put out there. Some really amazing knowlege that should never be forgotten!

There's speculation that this site's bunk, but the images seem to speak for themselves either way, worth checking out. I've got an obsession with all things old, and particularly in a state of decay. I've recently become a hobbyist 'urban explorer' and since have poked around a few interesting sites. My favorite sofar is the 'Belchertown State School for the Feeble Minded' near my house. I saw the kiddofspeed site when it first showed up and I don't think all of it is real myself but it is interesting nonetheless.

They could have renamed my HS "Belchertown State School for the Feeble Minded' :p
 
That's very unusual Rob. I'm all about the unusual. Tell us more about your hobby. I'd say pm me, but I'm thinking others would be interested as well. And if they're not they can just as easily alt tab back to the American Idol website they were so impolitely distracted from.

I was 14 yrs old and watching from Southern Illinois and at that point in my life had never seen a mountain except in books and on TV. Thanks for the post..very interesting reading!
