I was pretty stoked to finally pull the trigger and pick one up yesterday. I found one unit in particular that had all of the cool shit I was looking for. I take it home, charge it, read through the manuals, only to find that after downloading the latest and greatest maps available online, That it DOESN'T HAVE MY FUGGIN STREET ON IT. Needless to say, I'm pissed. This street has been here for 3 years.

So my question is, have any of you had any difficulty of the like with Tom Tom? I'm thinkin of returning it for a Garmin.

GPS's are only as good as the mapping service that they use. AAA sells a Garmin Maestro with all their mapping information. If you are a member you get a discount. Good luck with your choices.

The TomTom units are very good.

Well I talked to Tom Tom, they suggest that I request that my street be added to the maps that come out once a year. The last map update came out two weeks ago. So everytime I leave my house with a destination programed in, I will get, "Recalculating, Recalculating, Recalculating." What a crock. To top it off, when I asked Circuit City about an exchange to a company that I know has my street in their map system, they said I would still be required to pay the 15% restock fee.

I've been a long time GPS user, I've tried many of them and all have the pluses and minuses. I currently have two Garmins, a 360 and a 660. I also have a Navigon N100 Pocket Loox, it was on-sale and by far my least favorite.

Anthony is correct, bottom-line, your satisfaction will be greatly impacted by the quality of the maps.

Here is what my latest GARMIN map shows for your address:

The best on-line source for GPS info I've found is GPS Passion. My opinion, for everyday usage the Garmins are hard to beat, although often a bit more money.

Great, now the stalkers will be after me.

No really, I've used the Garmin product when on the road for business. I like the Garmin, but two items that sold me on the Tom Tom were the 4.3 screen and bluetooth that I can't find on the Garmin for a reasonable price.

That being said, I believe I will be biting the bullet and return the Tom Tom, pay the restock fee, and pick up a Garmin.

Thanks for your help.

I run the TT software on my phone (Treo 700 - Palm). It works great and has come in really handy. So far, no problems about driving "off the map" and it has known about all the POI's that I've put in...

The TT software is a bit unusual...it doesn't work like anything else I've used and it doesn't follow the Palm paradigm, but once you get used to it, it works ok. When I'm traveling in the car and I ask somebody to help navigate, right after I give them the phone with TT running they are like "WTF is up with this app?"...I tell them "It's French!"

Just to let you know, jetdr came out smelling like a rose.

That sucks -- but you may find that the Garmin has the same issue. I've been very happy with the TomTom's that we've had.

Can't you use TomTom's MapShare technology to just add yout street to the map? This video shows an overview of how it works.

I wrote to Tom Tom's customer service and called them and got the same response from both. They said that I needed to send in a street add request to customer service via the website, and they would consider putting it on the future maps. I asked how often they update the maps and was told that they update once a year. When I posed the question of the last update, she explained that it had been updated just two weeks ago, therefore, I would have to live with the current map for another 50 weeks.

I did take the Tom Tom back to Circuit City, and they forgave the restock fee for me as I got the refund in the form of a gift card. I went home and ordered the Garmin that I am familiar with, and I'm certain has my street on the current map, for $170 less than what I paid for the Tom Tom. Keep in mind that it doesn't have all the bells, just some whistles, but now I have some money to use towards the DVD player the kids have been bugging me about for the SUV.

Thanks for everyones input.

I'm not sure you understood my post... their MapShare technology lets you do things like add streets, add points of interest, etc. to the map database directly. You don't need to wait for them to update their maps.
