Hey guys, I'll be off the boards for a while. I am prepping to move to Boulder City, NV. The Coast Guard in all it's wisdom has decided to offer me Command of Loran Station Searchlight, NV. So we are packing up and hitting the road on the 15th. I report in to the Station on the 23rd and the Change of Command is the 27th. About the Station:

- Located 55 miles south of Boulder City NV between the cities of Searchlight and Cal-Nev-Ari
- The Station is on 255 acres of land
- 1 transmitter building, 1 admin/berthing building, and 1 pump house
- (4) 700 foot towers that support the wire antenna
- The Station is billeted for an Officer in Charge (E-7), Executive Petty Officer (E-6), Egineering Petty Officer (E-6), an E-5, an E-4; two reservists also are stationed there, an E-6 and an E-4
- The station is remain on air continuously all year long. Down time is usually measured milliseconds. Being on air for %99.97 is the benchmark set for us
- Boulder City is about 20-25 miles east of Vegas, with a population of about 18000 people.

I won't be able to accept any donations to CPI until mid August, nor will I be able to send out until then either. See ya soon guys.

I deliver out to boulder city all the time. I love it out there...if you are into wine there is a fabulous little bistro out there. A great thing about boulder city is that you can't gamble there, and are very close to the lake. Look us up when you get settled in.

There's a great brewpub on main street in Boulder City called Boulder Dam Brewing Company that had just opened back in March when my wife and I were out in Vegas.

Great beer and food. :thumbs:

Aren't you afraid this will be closed down soon or do you think you'll be converted to eLoran?

"While the Administration continues to evaluate the long-term need for continuation of the LORAN-C radionavigation system, the Government will operate the LORAN-C system in the short term. The U.S. Government will give users reasonable notice if it concludes that LORAN-C is not needed or is not cost effective, so that users will have the opportunity to transition to alternative navigation aids. With this continued sustainment of the LORAN-C service, users will be able to realize additional benefits."

The Coast Guard has been trying to shut down LORAN for a few years now. From what I understand, LORAN operations weren't written into the the FY08 budget. But when the budget went before Congress, it was deemed necessasry because it was being used as a back up for the FAA, "IF" GPS were to fail. The LORAN Conference is in September and I'll learn more about the direction LORAN will take in the next couple of years.
On a personal level, a short tour is the last thing I want in my life right now. I have done back to back 1 year tours, and want stability for my family. But I would be a fool to turn down a career enhancing tour as a Officer in Charge (the Enlisted equivalent of a Commanding Officer).
