On July 28, 1914, Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia. World War I began as declarations of war by other European nations quickly followed.
My grandfather enlisted the day after he graduated high school, went to basic training, joined his unit for mobilization and could see the coast of France when the war ended. He says they floated in place for 4 days before turning around and returning to Perth Amboy, NJ and then Camp Dix (Later Ft. Dix, NJ). I have a picture of him standing in front of a Pierce-Arrow army truck that has the largest radiator I've ever seen.
