WE here have had some informative chats on guns, ammo and laws, and there has been interest shown in the new Texas law regarding open carry.

I personally have had my CHL ( concealed handgun license) for about twelve years. In January of this year a new ( amended) called LTC ( licensed to carry ) law went into effect allowing for the right to " open " carry, which actually was defined as you can carry your sidearm in the open cowboy style on your hip, or, you may carry it in a shoulder holster. That is the basics of the law.

I went on line and renewed, received my armed forces discount, senior citizen discount and butt ugly discount. I was then informed that I would need finger prints, and where to go.

So over the river and through the woods I go where designated. Enter the room, sign in and wait along with 12 other folks ( found out this place also does background checks ).

I'm called back and I'm looking for the table with ink, the paper for putting your prints on etc. YES, I am that old to remember what I thought fingerprinting was. Not to be. The lady notices my obvious discomfort and asks me what's wrong. I said I was looking for the ink and paper. She says, NO, this is the new method, computer, special software, a small glass screen ( it will fit your four fingers ).

Sooooo, takes my two thumbs and does the routine, and does the routine, and does the routine and looks at me and says....., your finger prints are about worn out. I don't know if the FBI will accept this reading.

In ending, I may have to go back for a 1/1 and personal print inspection, but I'm driving home and thinking to myself, old enough to wear out your fingerprints, hum. The only good part was unlike the "old" days when you would pay big money to have this done, live long enough and you get it for free!

Your CHL allows you to OC. You shouldn't need to do anything different.

I don't want to get into politics here but ye gods and ancestors this just makes me cringe. Lots of us here have guns---I have a few and like 'em just fine---but do we REALLY want to go back to the wild west? It just seems a little extreme.

We've had open carry since Jan 1. I've seen one guy OC. Otherwise, it's really a non issue.

Yeah it was a big "sky is falling" issue, but 3 months on and I haven't seen anyone open carry nor have any of the wild west dire predictions come to fruition. But God forbid you try to smoke a cigar in public!

That's a great pun golfgar, but I can tell you this like God was standing here ready to strike me, I have NEVER tried puff one of an Acid. But I am amazed that they sell so well.

I think I'll stick with the Fish man, Padron 3000 Maduro is my heaven.

I guess I wasn't supposed to read this either, but then I read the word "gun" and couldn't stop. I wish my state allowed me to conceal carry, I've had some creep in a sketchy area flash me his gun and follow both me and the person I was with. Would have been nice to pull out a surprise if we didn't get away I feel like in a state like this where people aren't legally allowed to carry (aside from law enforcement), the only people who do are criminals who know the public isn't armed back to defend themselves. I know this is a touchy subject and all, but there has definitely been times where I would have felt much more comfortable with my gun on me.

Statistics prove, the states that allow concealed carry have lower crime rates and less deaths by gun. Those states must be doing something right. I'm in CA, and all the politicians are trying everything they can to eventually get all guns away from lawful gun owners. Then only the criminals will have them

In my opinion, open carry is too much of a red flag, creates far, far too much attention. We have a populace that for the most part, doesn't understand firearms and in many cases, actively dislikes them. We need to educate the public, not scare the crap out of them, even if they are misinformed and don't understand.

I carry all the time, and you'll never know it. Unless there's a need. And, of course I hope that never, ever happens.

I understand and agree, that's why I like concealed carry.... But can't!! :'(

I'm with you. I carry 99% of the time. I don't advertise it. And I don't always see the signs at doors telling me not to.

I figure if I ever have to show it, things are past the point of "hey, you can't have that in here".

I don't think we have conceal carry or public open carry, but there are young men (18-22) who are doing military service with assault rifles on the train most weekends. Either going home or going back to the military. It is a non issue because most males served in the military and have their guns at home. We do however smoke in open places all the time. I have seen more people walking around smoking a pipe here than I have seen people smoking a pipe at all in the US.

To Pug's original post. When I started working for the USDA in 2012, I had to take the old fashioned fingerprints, but a year later had to redo it with the new technology.
