Today was a good day. No work, academic or research committments so I decided to take the day off and what a day to do so; it was absolutely beaufiful, about 80 degrees and sunshine all day long. For lunch, I chose to go to the local Applebees (nothing special, but that's the town I live in), and enjoyed a nice meal along with a couple brewskies. On my way home, I was in a fabulous mood and decided to stop by my local tobacco shop (which I don't frequent often - the reason why will be revealed shortly). Although I know that they don't have a very good selection, I just figured that I could find something that would top off my lunch and that I could enjoy on my back porch.
I really had Padron on my mind, since (other than some PAM's), I haven't had one in a long time. Therefore, I thought that I'd pick up a 4000, 5000, 6000 or whatever they had. After spending about 5 minutes in the humidor, inspecting it in disbelief, they had none. I walked out and asked the older gentleman at the cash register. He proceeded to explain that they don't carry Padrons, haven't in a long time and never will. I really couldn't get the full story because he wasn't very articulate (perhaps only having three teeth in your mouth has that effect). At any rate, I looked for some other smokes to only find that they didn't carry them either; the selection was just horrible.
Therefore I proceeded home and went straight for my humidor and pulled out a PAM and enjoyed the rest of my afternoon. This is a perfect example of why the internet is absolutely gold for guys like me who live in towns with one single tobacco shop run by inept owners. If I had to rely only on what I could get in my town, I would be one sheltered cigar smoking pup. When I move to Tampa, I think I'm going to have a culture shock!
