Well ain't this some BS

I won't buy one until they're released to other major markets. AT&T sucks for a phone provider. Their network is ancient.. I'm glad I held off, others in my office didn't, even though I'm the gadget guy. When it comes out on Sprint, which I love, I'll be standing in line for one.

AT&T is new to our area but they are about 3 years too late IMO. The can't expect to gain market share in this area if they can't provide better service with more towers and add in the fact that the 2 "available" providers started locking everyone in with 2 year contracts some time back. What is the point of going to the local lakes or smaller communities that surround the town if you can't get any service!

AT&T are probably paying for half that loss. Assuming sales are down and this has forced a reduction in price, Apple must have something in their contract with

Not so much... Apple announced they've sold over 1,000,000 iPhones in the first 74 days of its release. The price drop is to go after the mainstream market, which is price sensitive (as opposed to early adopters).

And yes, the iPhone is made in China.

AT&T has been upgrading their high speed (3G) network over the last year or so:

Wireless data growth also has begun to reflect wider usage of the advanced capabilities and high speeds available with AT&T's new 3G UMTS/HSDPA network. AT&T has UMTS/HSDPA coverage in 165 cities and is on schedule to cover virtually all of the top 100 U.S. markets this year.

Here's to hoping they get off of their asses and do it. :)

Actually I have the new Razor Maxx from AT&T and its got the 3g service here in Milwaukee. Works really well.

Even though AT&T may be upgrading their 3G network, the iPhone does not have 3G capabilities. Love the phone, seems illogical that they would they release a new product without supporting the latest technology.

ya, that's the issue.. The edge network blows and makes for very poor online performance. The whole reason behind the phone was to be an online phone. My sprint ppc-6700 may be a little clunky, but its internet abilities are far greater than the iphone when the iphone isn't wifi'd..

The 3g would definitely be better, but the edge isn't terrible, as i'm in a somewhat rural area, we don't get 3g unless in Tallahassee. For basic stuff like weather and looking up chemical labels, it works fine. It definitely has some room for improvement though, some basic stuff liek email attachments and copy and paste would be nice...

Tested the Edge network on iPhone and the 3G network on my Cingular 8525 by browsing the identical pages on CP while I was ATT store...no contest, especially on the threads with MattR's photo posts. The 3G showed the pages nearly twice as fast. Even with that though, I'm still seriously considering the switch. The UI on the iPhone is the best I've ever seen on such a small device.

I was a little taken aback at first, but then I realized that I wanted it when it was $599 and I was willing to pay $599 for it at the time. For the past two months I have enjoyed using it and it has lived up to expectations. Never once in this time did I think to myself, "I can't believe I paid $599 for this thing".

This price drop will make the iPhone more accessible to the "average" consumer which makes me happy as an Apple, Inc. shareholder.

IMO, the $100 credit, while an after thought in response to criticism, is still a nice gesture as Apple were under no obligation to provide any reimbursement to people who bought iPhones at the higher price.

Nice brick. :) I've used that phone, the web browser is not exactly a nice experience.

Just wanted to bump this thread with some details about the 100$ credit:

Apple even finds a hip way to make amends.

The company will send a $100 store credit for early iPhone buyers directly as an SMS text message to the iPhone. To be eligible, the phone must have been purchased before August 22 and service needs to be activated on the device to claim the credit.

The move is aimed at placating early iPhone buyers irked by the fact Apple shaved $200 off the price of the gadget roughly two months after its introduction.

Devices purchased between August 22 and September 4 are eligible to get $200 refunded because of Apple's price protection policies. To get the refund, however, claims must be made by September 19.

Apple posted the details of the offer on its Web site on Friday.
