What caused this to happen?

First let me preface with the fact that I searched "bursting cigars" and "burst cigars" in the search function and came up with 0 results. I'm sure this question has been answered before and I apologize for asking such a pedestrian question. The cigar in question was an AF 858 Candela that was purchased from a local B&M and was kept in a sealed plastic bag for three days. My humidor is still in the process of seasoning so it spent 0 time in the humidor. When I took the cigar out of the celophane I gava it a few gentle sque and everything appeared just fine. The wrapper was in good shape and it definitely was not dry. Here's a picture right before I started.

Right out of the gate I had some burn issues for the first inch but then things evened out and everything was fine until the very beginning of the last third of the cigar. On a side note, this was my first candela AF and I must admit it was an enjoyable smoke that I actually smoked down to just about the nub. Flavors were medium bodied, filled with nutty nuances and a buttery end.

Here's a picture where the wrapper decided to split because it looks like the filler began to bulge.

I'm curious as to what caused this. Keep in mind it was about 42 degrees outside, the cigar was definitely not over humidified, and the wrapper from the get go had no visible imperfections.

What might have caused the bursting to happen so I can prevent it in the future? P.S. The cigar finished just fine and I smoked right on through the burst end so it did not ruin the smoking experience it was just a big strange.

Thanks in advance for your time and help,

Pete

I would say your weather conditions at least in part are the culprit. Last weekend 6 of us smoked in the cold and 3 of the sticks bulged and split. :(

Search "exploding cigars", or something of the like using the word "exploding". It has been an issue discussed on here, and as I recall, it had to do with the thin wrappers (more prone on natural/connie/etc) than on thicker maduro wrappers, and the temperature and humidity outside. Good luck with your search, and good to see that you stuck with that stick!

I've had this happen on several different type of sticks.

The cigars that this happened to me, seemed to be wrapped very tightly and had some draw issues in the beginning.

What I have found is that it occurred mainly on colder drier days, but I think the tight wrap and the type of wrapper (as mentioned by kann) are the main reasons this happens.

Thanks for the insight, the candela wrapper was incredibly thin, that combined with the elements outside most likely caused this to happen. This is very good to know for the future, thanks again.
