I hope this doesn't violate the "no politics" rule.  This is most definitely worth the eight minutes of your life...

It's hard to tell what's going on here. I don't have all the facts and the Congresswoman seems to have an agenda. I can tell you this from experience, that being in the military is an inherently dangerous job and you don't need to be in combat to be permanently disabled.
Just because this guy got a disability from the VA doesn't make him the bad guy because the VA is slow to respond to other Veteran's needs. The system needs fixing.
Let's not forget that that person got a thorough physical before his enlistment and was deemed qualified medically.

But, let's also remember how many phony people there are in this world that would sell their soul to the Devil for cash.  I have (as I'm sure you have) run into several people that talk the talk, but never walked the walk.  If this guy is BS'ing about his disability............it disgusts me.

I just don't know. I don't have enough information. What I get from the Congresswoman is, you're not worthy because you didn't receive your injury in Combat. I did and other combat Vets are waiting for disposition of their cases and it's your fault. Please note that she's getting her disability check. Well fer Christ's sakes that's not his fault. You don't get to write your own orders, and the VA does what it does. It doesn't matter that he injured that ankle in prep school. I'm sure the VA is aware of that injury. He passed his physical. If any one's at fault it's the physician who signed off on his medical exam on enlistment.

He broke his foot at football practice while appointed to a military academy prep school.  He played football for four years further in college, and only 27'ish years later filed for preferential disabled veteran's benefits in the form of millions of dollars in business contracts from the IRS (simply a renamed business he already owned).  Did you listen to his manifesto proclaiming his commitment to selfless service?  His time on "active duty" was well documented.  I am aware that technically he was on Uncle Sam's pay roll, and for service-connected requirements was considered active duty, but DID YOU LISTEN TO HIS OWN WORDS?  Agenda or no, this guy deserves every bit of public vitriol he gets from this.

...more later.  Time to watch Ghost Hunters with the fam.  I also need to let the steam disperse from the pressure cooker before any further comment.

I went back and re-watched the video. There are some things I didn't quite understand on my first viewing but...

Congress wrote the laws that allowed this person to do what he did. By her own assessment he probably didn't break the law. I understand where you're coming from, but the institution she's a member of is where you should direct your anger.

Good thing we are not to talk politics here!!!!!  So, where is the "talk politics here" blog?  I think I need a stint over there. :whistling:

On a side note from the CigarPass history 101, CP did have a forum specifically dedicated to politics back in 2004-2005. It lasted for about 3 months before it imploded due to an epic conflict between a group of members ( Purobrat vs. BigMac vs. CoventryCat :whistling: ). The political forum archives were wiped clean - one of the few times Rod ever chose to delete information here instead of just locking the threads.

I am glad I was not here for that. I like the no politics rule. Mostly 'cause I don't like it when others opinions don't match my own. :D

I'll admit we walked a fine line, but it was just three vets discussing veteran affairs. No mention was made of Republican or Democrat, Liberal or Conservative or policies. Hell, I don't even know what party the Congresswoman belongs to.

Actually, this is one of the rare times you're wrong. :D

The sub-forum still has all of the data and history, it's just hidden from the view. :)

Damn, you were right.  I had the forum set to auto-prune every 30 days, so you're right, it's all gone.

Re: Politics - This was originally posted to point out someone looking for a handout they may legally, though not morally, deserve and getting taken across a cheese grater for it by someone who has more than a passing interest in the matter.  If it's getting too far into politics, let's shut it down. It was never my intention.

Doc, I wholeheartedly agree the system enables this sort of thing.  As for an agenda, Ms. Duckworth (aside from being a bilateral amputee) VA-related resume is: "Duckworth previously served as Assistant Secretary for Public and Intergovernmental Affairs in the United States Department of Veterans Affairs from April 24, 2009 to June 30, 2011, and as the Director of the Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs from November 21, 2006 to February 8, 2009." - taken from everyone's favorite scholarly research site, Wikipedia.  She was a honcho at the VA and saw this quite a bit, I'm sure.  One person can't change everything that's wrong.  This is a good way to both call out a bottom feeder and bring light to the matter at the same time.  OK, enough of that...

I also meant in no way to imply that one must be combat-related in order to be classified as service connected, nor did I intend to imply that there should be a different standard of care or benefits.  I apologize if it came off that way.  I am the LAST one who should or would be arguing on that case. I am rated at 80% by the VA.  My career was cut short in 2008 (2006, actually) due to non-combat injuries.  I have received many different benefits that I never even knew existed, but I've also declined to accept several others that I just don't feel right taking advantage of.  That's just my moral stance on it, right or wrong.  I don't know, I think there is a definite delineation line between combat and non-combat injuries as far as personal and professional recognition are concerned, though I think there is also a difference between a legitimate, life-changing non-combat injury and something that is extremely minor but used to play the system.  As a disabled veteran (I prefer handicapped rather than disabled, actually), albeit non-combat, it really does bug me to see someone like this when I've been around so many others that truly "earned" the benefits they are entitled to.  Ms. Duckworth lost both legs and regular use of her right arm when her helicopter was shot down in Iraq.  I think her opinion has weight in the matter.  Perhaps this was not the platform with which to do it, but if nothing else she certainly has a right to question Castillo's "sacrifices for his country".

Also, if you look further into this case, there very well may have been illegal goings-on by Mr. Castillo in this matter.  Perhaps not illegal in his VA handling, but in other aspects of his company getting these contracts.  OK, if this is getting too political, I apologize, and we'll be done here.

*EDIT* Removed external links that carried over from the copy-and-paste
*EDIT II*  Why did this thing go all code on me when I saved the edit?  Removed all the weird code.  May have missed some.  Sorry.

I'll bet if the 3 of us were sitting with a fine cigar and an adult beverage discussing this, we would all be very close to the same opinion.

I'm sorry but if this guy was talking that story in some of the places I hang out the police would be involved.  'Nuff said.
