What SMOKING music are you listening to? (2025)

On more for you. Th Moog was invented in my late grade school years I think and ELP pioneered its use and Greg really dug deep with it.

This I know about. The first Moog became operational in 1964 but was not quite ready for prime time. By 1965 there was a saleable version out. Sales were slow with the first notable buyer being Mickey Dolenz of The Monkees in 1966 for a 1967 delivery. The Doors also bought one in late 1967 and the Byrds in '68. However, it was then Walter (now Wendy) Carlos who pushed it into the mainstream with the album Switched on Bach in October 1968 reaching #10 on the charts. Emerson also got his first Moog in '68 along with Rick Wakeman later of Yes. Robert Fripp of King Crimson also got a somewhat modified version in 1968 to feed his guitar into. In '69 Larry Fast got his first on the way to becoming THE Moog programmer of the 70's to the mid 80's

Greg Lake only played the Moog live for Lucky Man, Keith did the studio version

Larry Fast's side project SYNERGY

@AVB You're reading my mind. I was about to post Switched on Bach. By (then) Walter Carlos. How old are you? I was born in 1956. We track each other pretty closely.

Well. Nobody is going to agree with all of any of these "Top 100" lists. But since I graduated from 8th grade in 1970 and high school in 1974, I went looking for this. Not an ordered list, I'm sure, just a collection. But I'll get a couple of cigar's worth of listening time out of this, I'll bet!

Same age but I started earlier than most people.

You also have a lot more historical context in your posts. I just listened. You seem to have studied it. 👍
