Harry Smith's Anthology of American Folk Music

To say Harry Smith is eccentric would be a major understatement. Painter, filmmaker, historian, collector, archivist, activist, and more. He was a major figure in the 50's and 60's folk revival and without him entire segments of American music may have been lost.

An avid collector of early American music his self made annotated, notated, cross-referenced and biographed collection of 84 songs put out by Folkways records in 1952 has been the gateway for thousands of artists from Bob Dylan, Jerry Garcia, Delbert McClinton (Elvis Costello), Joan Baez to name a very few.

The 3 double album set has sold at least 750,000 copies since being released and has been continuously available for over 70 years. If you have an interest in American music be it Bluegrass, Country or Blues this is where to start.
