What SMOKING music are you listening to? (2026)

Eric Clapton said: "I just thought, 'Oh man, what am I doing this [for] when that has already been going on?'"
Roger Waters said this is the second most influential album in Rock after Sgt. Peppers.
Another from Roger:"That one record changed everything for me... Sonically, the way the record's constructed, I think Music from Big Pink is fundamental to everything that happened after it."
It directly influenced the Grateful Dead whose next albums of Working Man's Dead and American Beauty fully integrated Americana into their sound.

It is the foundational album for American Roots and Americana music.
58 years ago today Music From Big Pink was released.

Ramones, 'Its Alive' (1979)

A special Live Sunday or Punk crosses the pond,

50 years ago on July 4th weekend of 1976 the Ramones played 2 shows in London, The first one on July 4th at Roundhouse in Camden, London to about 2000 people and the 2nd show at Dingwalls venue also in Camden opening for The Flaming Groovies for about 4-500.. These 2 shows lit a fire under the nascent UK punk community with the holy trinity of British punk in attendance, The Sex Pistols, The Clash and the Damned along with JJ Burnel of the Stranglers who opened the first show. Chrissie Hynde who was working for the New Musical Express along with others who started their own bands after seeing these concerts. Music in not only the UKbut Europe changed because of these two shows.

Now no audio record of these shows exist but the Ramones did record It's Alive a bit less than 6 month later on New Years 1977 at the Rainbow Theater in London. It isn't often you get to hear a band in the peak of their early career - almost 30 songs in an hour across 2 records. Hearing it for the first time made you think "Hey I can do that!" and thousands of kids did.

Originally released as a 2LP recored it came out on CD in 1995 and as a special limited edition of 8000 released in 2019 of 4 CDs covering all 4 shows that were recorded to make the original album. There is also a 2 DVD set called It's Alive 1974-1996 that has about 3/4ths of the 1977 album.
