This project of amateur (semi-pro) recordings of 90s and 2000s concerts may be of interest to some of you.

John is a fellow Strake Jesuit water polo alum. Go Crusaders! He's a professional director/producer/creator, and I would guess at least some of you have seen his work. He created the SpongeBob and Edward Scissorhands costume for the Today Show hosts on Halloween. He was producer/director/writer of the feature film Drunk Bus. He created the Drone Boning video that went viral after appearing on the CONAN and the Colbert Report. He also has made several music videos such as Dangerous by Big Data (below) and a slew of commercials like Magic Johnson at ESPN or Justin Herbert and SoFi,

Way back in the dark ages I bought a new 1976 Trans Am. First thing I did was to put 15x10 Keystone with BFG 275 Radial TA tires in the rear and 15x8 with 215 tires on the front. Looked great but ran like a pig with only 215 HP out of the box. Next came a set of heads from a '68 GTO that raised the compression ratio from 7.6 to 10.5 along with an Edlebrock intakes and a completely reworked Qjet carb. Then I got a 12 bolt posi with 3.73 gears from a 71 Camero and swapped that in replacing the 10 bolt with 2.71 gears. Now we were getting somewhere. Finally went all in with a 4 bolt main block Milodon studs, decked. aligned bored, punched over .60, Cut down crank. forged rods and full floating pistons with a custom cam, ported the heads. Milpdon head studs, and Crane Roller Rockers and Hooker Headers. That took me to 500HP and remained more or less what I ran for a decade except for the cage which came a bit later after the engine build.

This came out in '79 and stayed in my car the rest of the time I owned it to be joined by the next one 4 years later



Now to come clean I was a bit of a cheater. Pontiac blocks from the 326 to the 455 were all the same physical size so you couldn't tell what size engine it was by popping the hood and looking. However, if you had a flashlight and knew the right angle to hit the block the engine size was cast on the block. Now Trans Am did come with some of the hottest 400 Cuin engines from 1969 to 1972 so it wasn't uncommon to see those in a car. 421, 428 and 455 not so much. We would grind off the 455 and stick weld 400 in it's place , clean it up with a Dremel tool rub some dirt and oil on it and now nobody knows you were running a 455 or a 472 in my case.

Jimi Hendrix, 'Band of Gypsys' (1970)​

Taken from the legendary 4 show stand at the Fillmore East on Dec 31 1969 and 1 Jan 1970 this was Jimi' first album since Electric Ladyland in 1968 and his first without the Experience. Only 6 months after Woodstock and 6 months before his death this would be the last album released during his lifetime. Jimi might be the only rock star to have over 10 times as many live records as studio ones but this is the first.
While selling well and reaching the top 10 in the US, UK and most of Europe there were critics who thought that Buddy Miles was just plodding along and that his two songs on the album did little for it. It was the 12 minute version of Machine Gun that was the centerpiece showing Jimi shifting toward a more R&b and Funk direction under the guitar pyrotechnics.
The oricinal LP was released as a 6 song LP with what is called the Puppet Cover which is fairly collectible. In 1991 there was a Japanese CD release with 3 more songs with that version becoming the standard over the next few years. Now remember there were 4 shows totaling 43 songs and while 9 were on the album a few made it to compilations but half never were officially released. There were all kinds of bootlegs some with different shows completely and some surprisingly complete with the best being "2 Nights At The Fillmore" a 6 CD set released in 2007. That is until 2019, 50 years after it happened the entire 4 night stand in order was released as "Songs For Groovy Children" While Band of Gypsys is good as a historical point, Songs is the 5 cd box set to get.

If you missed it, this song owes a bit to the Kinks Lola. While the official lyrics don't mention in the line "But with a face like that you got nothin' to laugh about" All the live version are along the lines of "But with a face like that you kinds look like a fella" including this version.That is reinforced later in the song with" Yeah, I'll pay your cab fare home, you can even use my best cologne" Cologne being something a man would wear. Add the social stigma of "Just don't be here in the mornin' when I wake up"

Never admitted as such it does make you think what he was really singing about though.

That's kind of a reach Ray. I think the cologne lyric is because the song is about a guys house and he wears cologne and has no perfume. I mean she is Rita... and her perfume is smelling sweeter. She is just fugly. 😁✌️

I'm certainly not the first to come up with what I posted. It has been one of those persistent rumors for over 50 years along with the supposed Sailor story about him being aa bit Bi in the 70's. Now I can see the tongue-in-cheek references in the song but never believed Rod was Bi - he was banging Britt Ekland back then.
