What's average cost for an electrician

Just had a guy out here, it was a pro-bono offer, the guys boss owed my friend a favor. My friend doesn't own a house, so he passed the buck on to me.

He spent 4 hours here...unpaid (i assume). I flipped him $100. I didn't know it was pro-bono going into it...

Just want to make sure I didn't over pay, I just wanted it to be a nice gesture...there is no such thing as a free lunch

I don't think you overpaid. We had an electrician come do some rewiring nd cost us $100 just to get them here and after 3 hours and materials it was another $200. (maybe i overpaid?) ???

Maybe I just hire better workers. In this neck of the woods $40/hr is about the norm. Cheaper then masons which are past $50/hr here now.

I found an Electrician that does work real reasonable
He spent 8hrs on a job for me that was more complicated than it looked like it would be. He had only planned on being at the house for 3hrs. All he asked for was $45 over the cost of supplies, and he picked up the supplies. I gave him a $100, and we fed him well for supper (since he was at the house so long).
A good tradesman is harder to find than a good doctor

Professionally, I charge around $60-70 per hour, which is basically a shop charge for repairs and such. For home wires, etc., it averages out to closer to $40 per hour, assuming it's a somewhat long term job (several days0. Just doing work for friends or aquaintances, depending on the work, I charge between $25-35 per hour and do not mark up the materials. Usual mark-up on materials is 30%.

Union electrician, here in NYC, costs are basically $60/hr straight time plus markup so that the company can cover some overhead. Basically it costs a company about $75/hr to send an electrician out to do a job

When you hire someone from a company to come do some work you're paying for benefits, insurance, overhead, profit, etc. for the company. If he screwed something up would you expect him to be responsible? There's a fine line between hiring a professional and giving some money to a friend who came over to do some work.

I just had an Electrician put can lighting in my office. He was 25 an hour plus Materals. But he was a friend, he was union but i didnt go through the union for him.

I am an Electrical Contractor in Los Angeles. For service calls, I charge:

75.00 service charge
55.00 per hour and usually between 20% and 30% material markup.

This is below the average in my area as I am not greedy, just looking
for some cigar money!!!! :laugh:
