What do you consider the greatest movie(s) ever made?

I consider "Das Boot" & "The Great Escape" to be top's on my list

Great choices. Two of my favorites as well. It would be extremely hard for me to pick an all time favorite so I'll just throw out a few :D

Once Upon a Time in the West
Leon (aka The Professional)
The Big Lebowski
Braveheart
Patton

I LOVE The Great Escape. I think I have to go with Godfather though.

Also deserving consideration : The Shawshank Redemption.

2001 A Space Odyssey, the greatest leap in FX ever in movies, even bigger then King Kong in it's day. Shots of space still don't look as good.

Das Boot, easily the best use of surround sound, the standard everybody should try to attain to.

Apocalypse Now, one of the few that makes you watch it. Gripping at all levels.

Full Metal Jacket, My bootcamp in 45 minutes ...This is my rifle, there are many others like it but this one is mine. Good night Chesty wherever you are.

The Bridge on the River Kwai, A classic tale of men overcomming all obsticles to do the right thing.

Those are just 5. I can do 15 more that are equally deserving to be a top movie depending on what mood I'm in.

Black Hawk Down, and if you don't hate Bill Clinton with a passion after seeing it, you just didn't pay attention.

I'm not a big movie guy, but my favorites - what I consider the greatest are - Animal House, Young Frankenstein, and the Sixth Sense.

My top would be (I'm sure I'm leaving off something obvious):

Manchurian Candidate
Pride and Prejudice
Amadeus
12 Angry Men
Titanic
Shawshank Redemption
Red Violin
Shakespeare in Love
Donnie Branco
In the Bedroom
Chicago
Moullin Rouge
Apollo 13
Romeo and Juliet

Cheers,
Dixie

Scent of a Woman
Meet Joe Black
Godfather
Clerks
Fight Club
O Brother
Fellowship of the Ring

I think the Trilogy will probablly sell more units than any 3 related movies. Has anyone read the Robert Jordan Epic: The Wheel of Time ? I am not trying to knock Tolkein's books, but the plot in Jordan's books at times is much deeper than Tolkeins 4. I really hope these get made into a movie series.

Emo

Soooo many I had to break them up

Cowboy;
The Good, The Bad & The Ugly
True Grit
Unforgiven

SGT York

Comedy;
Animal House
Friday
Meet the Parents

Drama;
The Godfather I,II,III
Steel Magnolias (don't laugh, it's a wife thing)
The Quiet Man

Honorable mention;
Endless Summer I,II (gotta love summer all year long, surf surf surf)

Can't believe I forgot the LOTR masterpieces. I read the first 7 WOT books before I finally gave up. I got tired of waiting 2 years for the next book and wondering how many books Jordan would stretch the series out to. 6, 8, 12, 100 :0 I mean it's getting a bit ridiculous don't you think Emo? Still if he ever does finish the series a movie could be amazing. Might have to get Reader's Digest involved to keep it under 50 hours :p

Wow I like so many. Some that come immediately to mind

Lord Of The Rings
Hud
Aliens
Ghost Busters
2001 A Space Odyssey
Dr Strangelove
The Fugitive
Taxi Driver
It's A Mad Mad Mad Mad World
One flew over the Cuckoos nest
Rocky

Bill

The Lion in Winter
Casablanca
Citizen Kane
The Godfather
My Fair Lady
Lord of The Rings Trilogy
Amadeus
Jaws

Dawn, have you seen the new director's cut of Amadeus? Really changes the meaning of a few things ;)
