So, my family and I rescued a sweet 4 year old BC from out local Human Society shelter saturday. He is super sweet, but very nervous right now.
He like cheese......

Shaggy was on his second shelter, he was transferred from a smaller on in New Mexico, to the one in our town. I feel like he may have been on his last chance.
He is a pretty boy, and I believe he has a Blue Merele coat.

He is the 2nd dog we have rescued, our first Jessy the Shiba Inu passed away last Christmas Eve. After working with a non socialised Shiba, we are no experts, but have tons of patience and love to help Shaggy make the move into a new and wonderful life.

Currently, he is most at ease in the far back corner of our large securely fenced yard, and is not very fond of steps.....We are allowing him to bond without 13 year old daughter, and with our help we hope this will be a great experience for them both.

We also have a 7 year old Cav King Charles, and her biggest accomplishment everyday is jumping of our bed in the morning so she can go to her bed in the living room and get back to sleeping...lol

yesterday and today are going to be a challenge.

It seems that Shaggs has developed Kennel Cough, and is responding in like fashion; not eating, very low energy, coughing...image1.JPG
Working now to get him in to the Vet, worst case I will take him to the Emergency vet, ours can not see him until later in the week.

Also found 4 ticks on him yesterday, so we removed them, and treated him and his bedding with all a natural product. He did manage to come in out out of the house on his own (3 stairs) but will not make the climb up the stairs to the 2nd floor yet.

I have a feeling that when he is over his cough, we will see a different dog.

Shaggy is my 2nd rescue, and I am not sure who gets rescued us or the pups....
We are using this time around to teach our 13 year daughter how important rescue is, and also how much work and reward are involved.

Such a wonderful story, Tim, and a beautiful pup. You are doing a good thing, and I'm glad you are instilling those values in your daughter. I know that Shaggy will come around to you all soon -- just has to get used to you all like you all have to get used to him. Best of luck, and congratulations saving a beautiful life.

I think I'm finally ready for another dog, and I want to do rescue, as well (Dolby was a pound puppy, himself). Our days here are unknown, so unless the right pooch finds us, we're going to wait until we get to a home of our own before adding another furry member of the family... wherever that may be.

That is awesome, recues are the best. My son got a beagle mix 4 years ago and she is the most loving dog. Good luck with Shaggy!

Quick update:

Home from the vet, got him in to Banfield, just not the one we usually go to, but at least the records will transfer over.

Running a fever....so we got some cough meds, and antibiotic to make sure it does not become something worse then kennel cough/
Boiling some chicken and rice right now, to see if I can get him to eat.

He was pretty alert while we were out, so that is a good sign I guess.

My heart goes out to anyone that saves a dogs life. Good on you and your family for giving this dog a chance; I'm sure you'll be repaid in ways that money can't buy. Chicken and rice are the foundation for the home made dog food we feed our guys. It's good stuff, very easy on the tummy, very tempting to the palate. We keep some in the freezer all the time just for cases like what you are going through.

Good luck to everyone....!!

Yesterday, we had our first incident...

I was in the office, my Wife was in the living room / kitchen with both Shaggy and Bella (caviler king), daughter was upstairs doing girl things I guess.

The 2 dogs got into a scuffle, and while my wife was close at hand, she did not have a clear view of what happened. Both were separated, no injuries we can see.
Bella was scared to come into the living room and sit with my wife, this has never happened before, and Shaggy was getting upset and growling under his breath when Bella came near.

Shaggy is not fixed yet (waiting on his appointment) , Bella is.

Also, to complicate things, Bella is deaf, and can't hear Shaggy's warnings.....

Today seems to be better, the dogs are sniffing each other and appear to be doing fine.

Shaggy is responding well to his meds, and starting to run and play a bit.

Hoping all works out soon. Rescues are amazing. I've had 7 Dogs my entire life all but 1 have been rescues. They are just the best most loving animals.

Heres to many happy years ahead.

Not surprised with a rescue when worlds collide. Patience and consistency will get things on an even keel. Every once in a while a couple of our herd will get into it, even though they are all fixed. To some degree, they are all dogs, that's what they do.

Hang in there......

When it comes to pets getting to know each other...water will find it's own level. Be patient and let them work it out. As for him getting acclimated to your family, that will definitely happen in time. Before you know it he will be wagging his tail and slobbering all over everyone. it's in their nature to be happy, you just have to give him time to adjust and find himself. Have the family go about their normal business and don't force the kindness on him...after a while, you'll notice him right in the mix.

Thx so much for the words of encouragement and wisdom

Gary nailed it...always welcome, never force. Before long your new one will just be another in the mix.

If they're anything like my big and little furbabies, they'll still scuffle once in a while even though one can't stand to be without the other.

They definitely rescue us! Gods purest form of unconditional love......

Great post!

We have 5 rescue dogs, and the latest a little over a year ago... We were driving back from a restaurant when we noticed two people bending over something in the street... as we got closer, we saw that it was a dog. My wife says "honey, go check it out!' So I pulled over, got out of the car and as I was walking up, I saw the one guy grabbing a piece of cardboard from the side of the road, and he said... "poor dog was hit by 2 cars, I'm going to drag his body off the street" As I bent down to check him out, I wrapped my hand around his leg and felt a very slight pulse... I immediately scooped him up, ran over to the car, put him in my wife's lap, and raced to the nearest animal hospital. They told me he died 3 times on the operating table, and they were able to revive him... they also said he was so hungry, that he was eating dirt and gravel was in his stomach. He ended up spending 3 months at the hospital... We would visit him every few days, and talk to him and love on him... you could tell that affection was very foreign to him, and looked at us like what the hell are you doing when we would kiss him. When he was finally on his feet, he would cower and grimace when anyone would get near him. Now, he is the happiest dog on the planet... so loving and sweet... and, as you can imagine, very grateful.
Meet Lazarus (Lazzy), he is the one looking into the camera:

So, yesterday was 1 week!!!!

Shaggz is getting better each and every day. He still has a bit of a cough, but it no where near like it was, and the "honk" is gone.
His appetite has increased, and so has his energy. Still trying to figure out what his "toy" will be.

He is much better up and down stairs, and has only challenged Bella the Caviler one other time, so 3 in total. The first was the physical confrontation, the other 2 were just vocal, where he was corrected and put on time out on his short anchor point in the house.

We have a feeling that prior to moving into our house, his house....
he was mainly an outside dog. He has no love for tile or wood floors, but is fine with the wooden steps, concrete, and LOVES the yard.

He came with a warning that he was a "marker" but so far has only marked outside.

He is a timid little fella, but seems to be coming along and out of his shell. He is super hard to resist when he looks up at you and wags his tail.....
