Bill Bruford - King Crimson and many others. He also was described by some critic with what has to be one of my favorite sideways complements ever. It was something to the effect that Bill "was a drummer acknowledged as being on the edge of fertile ground".
Billy Cobham - he has played with more people than I could list. He's a god.
Dennis Chambers - many Jazz bands including John Scofield and Mike Stern, 2 of my favorite guitarists.
Danny Carey - Tool. Such a badass.
Taz Bentley when he played with the Reverend Horton Heat
and Billy Conway of Morphine - nobody rocked a cocktail kit like he did with Morphine. If you like Morphine, check out Treat Her Right, the band that he and Mark Sandman were in years earlier.

OK, so I stick with a genre that tends to value sloppy musical play. Let's face it, The Ramones made a good living off of knowing four guitar chords so how much did they really care about the technical play of their drummer? That being said, quite a few talents can be found in the ranks of alternative music. While I nod to Keith Moon as a true ground breaker with a drum kit, I will stick to my genre for my vote.

One of the most impressive drumming performances I have seen live was by David Lovering of the Pixies. He was a man possessed in the live show. And, as this link clearly shows, he can even drum in a wind tunnel: Linky

I have to give a nod to Beyond the Band's mention of the Smiths earlier. They were more known for the deeply layered guitar of Johnny Marr and the lyric melody of Morrissey than they were for drums. Morrissey did have one solo song with some drums worth seeing: Linky (Just by the way, the legend that is Morrissey is starting his 2009 tour in a couple of months. This video shows the type of hero worship that his live shows become. From what I hear, he is including this nearly ancient Smiths tune in his lineup and since it shows some of the guitar work, here is the linky).

Nice to see some other drummers here. I've also been playing for a very long time, over 20 years now. I have many, many drummers that I love and are impressed with, but when you're talking about just a personal favorite... I have to go with John Henry Bonham. He's the one that completely changed the way I approached drums when I first heard him.



Honorable mention has to go to Tony Royster, Jr. This kid is unbelievable. Just search him on YouTube, sit back and be blown away.



Other drummers I can't get enough of are Vinnie Paul, Danny Carey, Buddy Rich, Neil Peart, Mike Portnoy... the list goes on!

Huge Rush and Slipknot fan here!! My hats off to you for giving them the nod! I have been playing drums for about 22 years, and will never be as good as those guys. Without those two, then mine has to go to Carter Beauford from The Dave Matthews band, just for pure style and finesse. Not a big Dave fan but this guy rocks!!

Watch from about 1:45 to 2: 10, then 3:00 to the end. Just awesome!

I would have to go with Neal Pert myself if forced to name one, but since honorable mentions are being named you can not go wrong with Keith Moon or John Bonham, and i would have to save a space for Danny Carey from Tool(the drums just makes that band for me).

Ohhhhh and in honor of the drummer from some funky(not in the good term) band that played at the end of the night at Quad State Herf any drummer who plays more cowbell !!!!

My favorite band is The Mars Volta.

I have a nephew who is the best drummer I have ever seen and that includes all the greats. But he is smart enough to know that the life of a musician is not a very healthy one.

As for who I think sounds the best, Frank Beard of ZZ Top has his drums perfectly miked and they sound awesome!
