They are the other side of the island from the DR and closer to Cuba so one would think the conditions would be pretty good.

It's the weather. Hati is on the leeward side of the island which I'm told is bad for tobacco cultivation. But this is an old memory and I might be wrong.

Doc.

On further review I believe Haiti is on the windward side of Hispanolia.

Well, given the other countries that produce cigars, we can rule out bat crazy dictators, civil wars and reoccuring natural disasters can't we?

I wouldn't. There maybe struggles in other tobacco producing country’s but Haiti changes hands almost monthly. They don’t even put it in the news anymore. Which really surprises me because you would think it would spill over to the DR. It simply seems there just not enough economic consistency to start trying.

That just my 2 cents.

While agree that the political end of things isn't that good now, that hasn't always been the case. Both Pappa Doc and Baby Doc were in power for a total of 30 years from '57 to 86 and there was no political upheaval then.

If you think about it, does'nt it seem that cigar producing countries all have political and social disputes on an never ending cycle? If you don't believe me watch CUBA! ymmv!
