Yesterday I decided to go to town after work because my wife wasn't going to be home until late. I thought I would just run out and pick up a wine fridge and have it set up before she got home. (she said that the cooler in the middle of the floor has to go.) I went to Target, Walmart, Kmart, Lowes, Home Depot, Best Buy, Circuit City, Bed Bath & Beyond, Sears, Big Lots, Magic Mart, another Lowes and finally just went home. Everywhere I went either didn't have a thermoelectric model or they only had the floor model. I'm will get one this weekend even If I have to travel to 10 cities and 1000 stores. At least I got to pick up a dozen sticks from the B&M while I was out. I just can't wait to get them a proper home. :D

That's funny, I had the exact same experience last week. I have outgrown my 30-bottle wine fridge, and wanted to pick up a larger one. I even think I went to the exact same list of stores you said, and all they had were the floor models. I'm looking at just ordering one at this point.

Just FYI - I have a 50 bottle Wine cooler from Home Depot.

It is not thermo electric, rather it has the conventional compressor type system. I added a couple pounds of beads from Cigarmony.com, and it does just fine maintaining RH and temps. When the compressor cycles a lot in the warmer summer months the humidity will drop for a few minutes, then quickly rebound once the compressor stops. I placed the beads in the mesh sock type thingee that Cigarmony includes with their beads, and placed them on the small ledge in the bottom/rear of the unit, where the condensation collects, those beads then collect that condensation water and regulate humidity. Therefore, I do not need to add distilled water very often. YMMV, but I wouldn't rule out the conventional wine chillers.

I'm not really dead set on a TE model. Chances are that no matter which one I choose, I will never even plug it in. The temp in my coolers rarely get above 63 thanks to cold winters and air conditioning in the summer. Its just that you do lose a little space on most of the compressor models that I have seen. I thought about just buying a small fridge but I figure that it is woth the extra money to get the glass door so I can keep an eye on my babies without having to open the door.
