Wine-O-Dor Humidification

I was talking to a friend about the wine cooler that I just bought, and he asked me what I was doing for humidification. I said that I was going to use Heartfelt beads, and he said that he thought you had to use active humidifcation for a wine cooler. I have searched around the wine-O-dor threads, and can't find the answer. I see in the pictures that some of them have beads in them. One I saw was using beads in the bottom to soak up moisture from the cooling unit. So do I have to use active humidification? Or can I go with my original plan of beads?
Thanks in advance for your help!

Beads is all you will need.

Mine has been up and running for over 10 months now here in FL, I have 1.5 lbs of beads and it is rock solid. I did follow along with the condensation recycling idea and it works like a charm.

The key to keeping everything stable with beads is fans on a timer as the RH will settle into the bottom of the cooler. Oh and lots of cigars, the more empty space the more air to keep humidified, so ya just gotta fill it up ;) to keep everything in order.

I have 2 Vinotemps up and running with a little over 2 lbs. of beads in each unit. I have had no issues.

1.5 lbs should work fine in that one. I use 2 lbs in my 28 bottle, but you can always add another 1/2 lb if you need to later.

Well 2lbs of beads costs roughly $70.

I'm thinking about one of these instead. I'm reading good reviews on it and the fans will operate along with it.

I have used a Cigar Oasis XL for several years in one of my desktops and a Hydra for a few months in another desktop. I haven't had any real problems with the electronic units but after getting beads, I wouldn't go back.

The electronic units (mine anyway) seem to have some questionable RM readings. Particularly my Hydra. I have that desktop humidor at 67% (measured with 2 salt tested hygrometers) but to get that I have to keep the Hydra set at 61.5% or so. And I can get swings of up to 4% or more.

Beads are, for lack of a better term, almost idiot proof. With 65% beads my Vinotemps remain within 1% of 65%.

Me likey.

Wyatt, please reconsider and go with beads. I think it may be in your own best interest!! :D

Hehe, I hear ya Bill.

That's good info. It would certainly be easier as far as set up goes, just to go beads and a few oust fans or something of the like.

You can adjust your hydra's humidty controls. Do a salt test once every six months or so to make sure it's reading correctly and you'll be fine. Remember, everytime you unplug it, your changes aren't saved and it goes back to zero!

Have you used one? Any thoughts?

Yes. :D I switched out the foam and went with SAPs. I posted on this not too long ago. I like my hydra. It's nice, cheap, and expandable.

Thanks a lot for the help fellas! Beads and fans it is. Now does it matter what kind of fans you use?

Depends on how much air you want to move. For example, I bought an Oust fan (discontinued I believe) and it did not move enough air for my Vinotemp at all. I bought a PC case fan from Radioshack which moves 33 cfm. I wish I would have gone for something closer to 80 cfm, but it works for now. It was like 15 bucks, 12VDC, and I hard wired it to a DC converter and into a timer. Really simple.
