Today I wondered into a new B&M. The place had a great selection and pretty good pricing. As I walked around I conversed with the clerk who was very friendly and seemed knowledgable about cigars. On a scale of 1-10 I know .5 about cigars and that .5 is a direct result of CP. Two things in particular that I've learned from here helped me indentify this pleasant clerk as either a BS artist or an misinformed enthusiast who would benefit from a couple of months on CP.

1) As I came upon a box of Oliva Serie V box I asked him if he'd had one. He went on to explain that the Oliva family had supplied tobacco to other cigar makers but had recently come out with their own cigars. I said, "Oh really?"
2) As I came upon two boxes of Anejo's I asked if he had experienced any mold issues with them? He said, "Actually, that's called plume. And people actually look for that in a cigar. You just wipe it off and smoke it." I said, "Oh really?"

He wasn't trying to push inferior cigars on me and I don't think he had any malicious intent, but thanks to CP I know not to ask him any important questions. I can do that here where there are truely knowledgable people willing to answer questions. Thanks CP.

By the way, he did say he was getting in two boxes of Padron 80th Anniversary editions. I don't think I'll be buying any for myself but if anyone would like me to get some for them I'd be more than happy to do so. Just PM and I'll put in an order with him.

This one happened to me at one of my local B&Ms specifically they were Anejo #77s (sharks). I politely said there's a "well there's a big difference between plume and mold" but he refused to admit that there were any molding problems with them. I wonder if he's just never experienced it or if he thinks I won't buy smokes from him if he stocks moldy cigars.

Yep, this place is great that way. I've been here for a little over 3 years and continue to learn new things about this hobby/lifestyle just about every day. :)

I swear, the whole "It's not mold, it's plume!!" thing is so tired... it's sad to see so many vendors either being misinformed or misinforming their customers knowingly.

I hear ya. I'd like to think that most are just not informed about the mold issue or have never experienced it first hand. That's another great thing about CP. You don't have to personally experience an issue like mold to know it happens more often than it should -- you can learn from reading about the experiences (good and bad) of numerous others.

How much was he asking for them would be the relevant question.

AVB, I'll stop back by tomorrow and ask his price. He had Anejo #49 for $9.10 before tax. I've never personally bought any so I'm not sure what they go for. But his Tatuaje and DPG were very competitive from what I've seen.

From what I understand there are two separate Olivas. One, the Oliva Tobacco Co. and Oliva Cigar Family. The Oliva Tobacco Co. supplies, well, tobacco:

"Oliva Tobacco Company
3104 N Armenia Ave, Tampa, FL 33607-1658, United States
Phone: (813) 248-4921
SIC:Farm-Product Raw Materials, NEC
Line of Business:Whole Farm Product Raw Materials Tobacco Farm"
*from here and here.

An interesting interview from CA with Angel Oliva from the Tobacco Co.here. The Angel 100 is from Oliva Tobacco Co. I am not sure, if anything, else cigar wise is from them.

The other people, Oliva Cigar Family makes, well, this. All the Serie O, G, S, V, and Master blend I, II, II are the Oliva Cigar Family.

I have also heard that the Oliva Cigar Family uses Oliva Tobacco Co. tobacco, but can't document this craziness. As for knowing what I know about cigars is also 98% from here, but be warned, this is my 2 cents.

First hand knowledge.

Mullet, this is how I knew that guy at the B&M wasn't very well informed. Unless some prankster is posing as John Oliva Jr., this is "straight from the horses mouth" as AVB put it so well. How many other places can say John Oliva Jr., Pete Johnson and the like post on their forums? I can't imagine very many.
