My son has an XBox 360 that we purchased in late '07 (it's the Halo Special Edition or something like that). About 3 weeks ago he started having an overheating problem. He can play it for only about 30 minutes and then it just shuts down on him. Half the ring on the front lights up red which he told me means it overheated and shut itself off. After resting for a little while he can start it back up and play it but again it shuts down after about 30 minutes. The back of the unit does get very hot and we have tried to keep it cool with fans but that doesn"t seem to work. Has anyone experienced this same problem? Does anyone have any ideas as to what would solve it? It's a little over a year old so I don't think it is still under warranty but I've heard that overheating has been attributed to a design flaw. Does this mean MS will fix the problem?

It's a known problem.

try google.

I believe that MS stated that they were expanding the warranties on their units for instances like these. I haven't personally had the problem, but I know it is out there and went ahead and bought a new unit a few months ago because of this.

Yep...MS will replace the defective unit. Mine has done this in the past but I soon realized that I was leaving the entertainment center closed. Sucks when it happens though...

Here's a link to Microsoft's customer contact page for X-Box 360 issues.

The "Red Ring of Death" (RROD) is a known and unfortunately common problem. Good news is that Micro$oft has stepped up to the plate with extended warranties and is generally pretty good about taking care of these issues.

Good luck - B.B.S.

That happened to my xbox also and then soon the RROD came. Give their customer service a call and they should fix your xbox for free.

Here ya go Charley, I just experienced this in October:

I got my Xbox unit back, repaired, and all that fun stuff in about 3 weeks I wanna say? Yours is DEFINITELY still covered, and to confirm this, go to the link in this post on the above thread:

Special thanks to Mr. Tom for providing the link! Good luck to you Charley, and dammit, we'll herf SOON! I hear I missed you at Geoff's place last weekend. :(

Mine just died 2 days ago. To be warned they only extended the warranty for the 3 red light red ring of death. So I would be sure to wait until it does that to send it back so you get it repaired for free, unless you're still in the original warranty period.

Ery

Thanks for the info brother and thanks to everyone for the advice. I'll see if we can get repaired under warranty.

Yeah Souldog, we had a great time last Saturday, sorry you couldn"t be there. I'm gonna try to get over there tomorrow to watch the Rose Bowl with Geoff, stop by if you can.

33% of all Xbox 360s will RROD! Contact Microsoft, they will send you a coffin. The UPS drivers have come to know that box well. Our driver told us the other day that over half his truck was either coffins coming or going.
