You guys might remember a while back that I had a iPod Nano (gen 2) 2 gig for sale or trade for cigars...

I ended up hooking brother Double D with it and he fell in love with it. And watching him with it, I started to regret my decision to part with it (Moki told me I was a fool :p )

Well due to my job I received another "free" (had to buy a server for my company) Nano a week ago. This time, a Nano (gen 3) 4 gig and I decided to keep it.

Wow what a difference compared to my "older" 2 gig ZEN V mp3 player (which I gave to my oldest daughter).

I now have well over 450 songs on it and a couple of podcasts (including a few video ones) and a bunch of pictures, and I still have well over 1.4 gigs of room and couldn't be happier.

iTunes for windows still needs a bit of work but I'm learning to get used to it. But an iPod is so easy to work its not even funny.

So far I've purchased a Logitech Pure-Fi Anywhere™ for it when I'm out on the balcony smoking a stick and am amazed at how much sound it puts out for speakers that I can carry anywhere with me with one finger (yes the system is that light...) and I'm looking for more iPod toys to use with my new baby.

I couldn't be more happy with my Nano and fully and wholeheartedly recommend that anyone using an off brand mp3 player look at the new iPods. There is a world of difference between the apple products and the competition.

I had a generic MP3 player at one time. My wonderful wife bought me an 80GB, Ipod Classic for christmas, and it's so far above the quality I was used to.

MP3 players in general are the only mainstream audio component that has gone backwards in sound quality. Think about it.

It's hard to carry a turntable around, though.

I had one of the first iPods. I never used it (I just don't listen to much music outside of my home) so I gave it to my sister in law. She loved it so much she's gotten just about every new version that has come out since.

Good luck with it, Shawn.

The 1% of the population who can tell the difference _and_ care are free to carry around a music device that'll play FLAC files, which are lossless. I'm sure there are a couple of them out there...

I have a 60 gig that gets played at least 9 hours a day. I run it on battery through computer speakers at work and through a clock/radio docking station at night Love it.

I just switched from the video iPod to the iPod touch. As much time as I spend in Airplanes, I use it a lot. Much better than any of the other player that I have seen out there.

It's too bad the pesky legal system prohibits it. With all the music lovers on this board, we could have a wicked music exchange...

A lot more then 1% can hear the difference but the younger generations aren't exposed to high quality sound and so don't know any better. Your statement still doesn't negate what I said though.

MP3 players are not meant to provide the best (or improved) sound quality so I'm not entirely sure what your point is. Their sole purpose is to provide ease of having music with you (potentially your entire music collection) when you are traveling, in your car, at work, etc.

Thus, while your statement may be true, it is moot because improved sound quality never was and never will be the purpose of an MP3 player.

You may as well have said that audio compression leads to decreased sound quality. Of course it does, but improved sound quality is not the purpose of compression.

I have a 30GB ipod that has been awesome. About a week ago it locked up. I have been on the apple web site and tried everything I can to reset it. It sucks I have a friend who had the same thing happen to him and when he sent it back to Apple he had to pay $150 to fix it.

I can agree if you would add "in this case" to your statement. Dolby, dbx, dolby digital, and DTS were all compression/expansion standards that did improve sound quality. Only recently has uncompressed multichannel become standardized. With the storage ability available there is no reason to listen to compressed music unless that is a last resort or the radio. JMHO, YMMV.

The reset sequence didn't work? What did Apple say the problem was with your friends unit?

I'm kind of what you would consider an "audiophile", and I really am disgusted by MP3 players (for the most part). The quality is pretty bad unless you rip the songs at a high bitrate yourself -- which are usually few and far between if venture into the realm of "obtaining them" on most of the popular P2P services (Limewire, etc.) . However, if you're doing it legal way, always rip in high quality from your discs. By the way, anyone know if ITunes has high birate MP3's? I'm not 100% sure, as I don't use the service, but I'd be willing to guess not.

By the way, anyone into high quality headphones (aka "head-fi")? I'm currently using Sennheiser HD-650s with a nice amp setup. Love them to absolute death. Wouldn't give them up for the world. However, when plugged into an MP3 player, they pretty much absolutely drop the battery life to 0... haha!

Sure beats the hell out of anything BOSE can even begin to think of offering. I've used and owned tons of different "head-fi" and have (overall) liked the Senn 650s the most.

Sennheiser makes fantastic headphones. I use the wireless ones at work. Unbelievable sound and terrific range.
